Barcelona, world's digital talent hub, puts spotlight on Indian professionals

Barcelona is one of the most attractive cities in the world for its quality of life, history, culture, multiculturalism and safety. The UK newspaper Daily Telegraph, recently rated the city as the best in the world to visit. With some of the world's leading technology companies, such as Google, Intel, Cisco, T-Systems, Facebook and Oracle based there, Barcelona has some of the best tech professionals in the world working and living in the city.

Beyond the big names, the Catalan capital is home to more than 1,900 start-ups. According to the Start-up Heatmap Europe 2022 Report, Barcelona is currently the 3rd most attractive European city for entrepreneurs, due to its "strong ecosystem and access to talent". Barcelona is also the 7th most attractive European city for technology investment, according to the Atomico State of European Tech 2021. A new start-up law recently approved by the Spanish government is introducing an important range of fiscal, visa and residency advantages for international professionals and companies willing to move to Spain, as well as entrepreneurs and investors.

Barcelona’s success as a talent hub is reflected in the Digital Talent Overview report. Authored by Barcelona Digital Talent, a programme by the public-private initiative Mobile World Capital Barcelona, the report analyses the scope of digital talent in Barcelona and Catalonia. According to the report, 10,500 new digital professionals joined the Catalan labour market in 2021, reaching almost 100,000 international profiles in the region. In Barcelona, 31.4% of digital profiles are international, a figure 50% higher than in 2020.

The most in-demand roles are web developers, interface and user experience designers and business software implementers (CRM and ERP). Other highly sought-after roles include UX/UI designers and cloud professionals.

In an environment with numerous large technology companies, an ecosystem favourable to start-ups and state of the art digital infrastructure, there is ample opportunity for exciting things to happen. And it is precisely this dynamic role that Mobile World Capital Barcelona has been developing for the past ten years. This organisation has developed programmes that have become global reference points, including Smart Connectivity and 5G Barcelona, which have promoted more than 25 pilots with 5G technology in the city, as well as The Collider, which in five years has helped to promote almost twenty science and technology-based start-ups, and Digital Future Society, which focuses on technology on a human scale.

Promoting digital talent

Barcelona Digital Talent also carries out actions to promote talent, such as JUMP2DIGITAL, a conference that brings together companies and talent to discuss new digital professions, BCN Inclusive Coding, a professional reskilling programme aimed at people in vulnerable situations, allowing them to learn the most in-demand digital skills to help their integration into the labour market, and the institution’s scholarship campaign to promote digital training.

The Barcelona City Council has opened the International Welcome Desk, a “one-stop shop” to facilitate the arrival of international talent helping them with registration with local authorities, enrolling children in school, or finding a home. This is especially important given that Barcelona has a strong international community that makes up 21% of its population.

Welcoming digital talent from India

Barcelona wants to continue growing. The city’s institutions understand that their most valuable asset is people. For this reason, a delegation from the Barcelona City Council and Mobile World Capital Barcelona will be in Bengaluru from 20 to 22 June, where they will visit various universities in the area. Indian digital talent has become one of the main focuses for the Catalan capital due to its great potential.
