We all know him as Kattappa of Bahubali, we have seen him as a hopeful father in Kanaa and as an eccentric principal in Nanban. Sathyaraj entered films in 1978 playing Vicky in Sattam En Kayyil. He was typecast as a villain during his first phase. Forty-three years since then, Sathyaraj has portrayed precious roles which have struck a chord in our hearts. Here is a list of a few of his films you must not miss.

Kasi (Sathyaraj) mistakes Gayathri (Devayani) for a prostitute and catcalls and teases her. But he is later shocked to learn that she is his friend’s lover. He goes out of his way to clear the misunderstanding. Later his friend asks him to let Gayathri stay with him for a few days before they elope. But his friend doesn’t return. By then, Kasi realises that he has fallen in love with Gayathri.

Thamizharasan (Sathyaraj) returns to his wife’s village after her death. He is detested by all who mistakenly blame him for his wife’s suicide. But he helps them and even unites his sister-in-law with her lover. A must-watch comedy film of Sathyaraj with great chemistry of the Vadivelu-Sathyaraj combo.

Sathyaraj plays Virumandi Santhanam a.k.a Virus in the movie. He is an egoistic professor who considers marks and ranks as the hallmark of a great engineer. But he is shocked when an easy-going Panchavan Parivendaran scores highest in the class despite his constant slacking off. Virus will come to learn that there is more to engineering and life than ranks.

Sathyaraj plays an old fashioned music director Vetriselvan who becomes jealous of his junior’s newfound fame. A.K. Shiva (S.J.Surya) introduces new techniques in his music composition and the public becomes attracted to these new melodies. Vetriselvan, who used to be the centre of attention and respect, finds this unforgivable. He devises various ways to get rid of Shiva. The film is rumoured to be about the rivalry between Ilayaraja and A.R.Rahman because of the striking similarities.

Kanaa

Sathyaraj as Murugesan who wishes to see his daughter play in the Indian Cricket team is unforgettable in Kanaa. He essays the role of a poor farmer, affectionate man and helpless father effectively. He wants to support his daughter’s dream of becoming a cricket player. He doesn’t care about what others talk or want about his daughter. The only problem is that he cannot financially support her dreams. The film depicts a father’s struggle and a daughter’s resolve.
