Visaranai is based on an autobiographical novel Lock Up by M. Chandrakumar. The movie features police brutality in the most poignant way. Four friends are apprehended by the police on a false theft case. They are tortured into confessing to the crime they didn't commit. The foursome are then offered a chance to escape, if only they take part in a conspiracy scheme. But the story will not turn out the way they want or the way the audience wants it to end.

This National Award winning movie is based on Poomani’s novel Vekkai. Not only is it an adaptation but the incidents shown in the movie also happened in real life. The massacre scene is supposedly the Kilvemani massacre that happened in 1968. Sivasaami (Dhanush) is a meek farmer living with his sons and wife Pachaiyamma. Their eldest son gets killed in a caste scuffle and their family is broken. When the people come for his youngest son too, Sivasaami takes control. He is a man with a history of violence and nothing can stop this storm of a man.
