Political films are said to mirror the realities of the politicians and parties of the country. Over the years, such films have narrated the tales of various political rivalries, the ensuing blood baths or even the mind games that the leaders play for their own gains.

With Kerala having one of the more politically aware populace in the country, it’s no wonder that movies of such genres and themes have always been dominating its film industry. Some of the filmmakers too have used cinema to push their political ideologies.

From Mohanlal and Mammootty to the younger stars such as Nivin Pauly and Tovino Thomas, they have all been part of at least one political film that has redefined their careers.

Jibu Jacob’s directorial Vellimoonga is a political satire, starring Biju Menon in the lead role with Aju Varghese and Nikki Galrani in pivotal roles. The story is about a wily, middle-aged politician, who falls in love with a much younger woman, only to find out that she is the daughter of his long-lost childhood love. Amid all of this, he tries to win a seat for the ascent of his political career. The film also has Asif Ali in a cameo role.Catch this on Disney+ Hotstar.

The story of Unda revolves around the struggles of a group of policemen, who travel to North India to patrol a polling booth in a Naxal-infested area. Helmed by Khalid Rahman, this drama has some stellar performances by Mammootty, Shine Tom Chacko, Jacob Gregory and Arjun Ashokan.Unda is available for viewing on Amazon Prime.

Touted as Indrajith Sukumaran’s best film till date, the movie is directed by Arun Kumar Aravind and scripted by Murali Gopy. Left Right Left revolves around a character named Roy, who exposes the wrongdoing of a corrupt politician, with the help of his friends. Soon, all his friends get killed one by one, before he too succumbs to death. Indrajith’s character Jayan, a corrupt policeman, discovers the connection between Roy and Sahadevan.Watch this on MX Player.

The directorial debut of Prithviraj Sukumaran had Mohanlal playing the lead character of a politician named Stephen Nedumpally, who also has a mysterious past. The movie had a stellar cast featuring Vivek Oberoi, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas and Indrajith. In the movie, after a political leader of a party passes away, Stephen comes to the aide of his party and the former’s family. But is Stephen all he says he is?Stream this one on Amazon Prime.
Oru Mexican Aparatha
