If you still believe that Marvel and DC were the first to explore the genre of superhero movies, you’re incredibly wrong. Long before the superheroes of DC and MCU gained massive fanbases, we saw some exciting superhero movies that belong to neither comic book publishers. Here is a list of five superhero movies that are not by DC or MCU but will definitely make it to your own personal collection of best superhero movies.

Kingsman: The Secret Service
8OTTplay Rating
The plot of Kingsman was so promising, that Marvel had to create Icon to keep the franchise under its banner. But originally, Kingsman was an independent superhero film. It’s got spies, it’s got action sequences that will leave you on the edge of your seat and it’s got twists and turns. Kingsman stars Michael Caine, Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Firth and Mark Strong.
7.4OTTplay Rating
Kick-Ass is as NSFW as a superhero movie gets, based on the R-rated comic book movies. The story revolves around a geek who aspires to fight crime in real life, just like the superheroes he is obsessed with. When he meets with a tragedy, his dreams start to come true. Kick-Ass stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Nicolas Cage.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
7.7OTTplay Rating
Heroes don’t wear capes in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Though the plot does not traditionally feature superheroes, Scott Pilgrim, played by Michael Cera, gets into epic fights to win Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Directed by Edgar Wright, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a delightful superhero movie.
7.1OTTplay Rating
M. Night Shyamalan’s masterpiece superhero film Unbreakable stars Bruce Willis who gets involved in a train accident that renders him almost invincible. Taking wisdom from a mysterious comic book, his character emerges as a superhero. The tale is a visual treat and is one of Shyamalan’s best movies.
Sky High
6.4OTTplay Rating
Sky High almost matched the craze of Harry Potter at one point and that’s saying something! Sky High features a school for superheroes where the teenage son of the world’s two greatest superheroes is struggling to find his powers. The film explores themes like bullying and family pressure but still makes for a super fun watch.
