Period dramas are one of the biggest and most expensive projects made in Indian cinema. Be it Baahubali or Padmaavat, recreating the grandeur and settings of the ancient time is not an easy feat. While most of the time facts and fiction are merged in an epic period movie, the makers have to try their best to make it as authentic and believable as possible.

Here we have created a list of Indian movies that have successfully accomplished that feat and are now available to watch online. If you are a historical/period movie lover, take a look below and start streaming now.

1
Padmaavat
7.5OTTplay Rating
This Sanjay Leela Bhansali epic features a stellar ensemble cast including Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Aditi Rao Hydari and Jim Sarbh. Based on a poem by sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540, the movie portrayed valor, bravery, jealousy and obsession. The film is surely one of the best period dramas with breathtakingly beautiful settings and costumes.
2
Jodhaa Akbar
8OTTplay Rating
Jodha Akbar is one movie that would get us all hooked on period films. In a way, Jodha Akbar changed the perspective about period films in Bollywood. Intricately made sets, expensive costumes, well choreographed action scenes - all contributed to making this epic love story grab a spot in the audience's hearts.
3
Mughal-E-Azam
8.7OTTplay Rating
A story of love, class differences and the struggle between a father and son, Mughal-E-Azam is considered an evergreen Indian classic. The movie narrates the story of Salim, the son of an emperor, who is in love with Anarkali, a courtesan. Even though this movie was first released in 1960, it still is one of the best period films made because of the attention to detail as well as the gripping storyline. A coloured version of the movie was released in 2006.
4
Baahubali: The Beginning
8.1OTTplay Rating
Baahubali was the first of its kind pan-India movie, which was also the most expensive one at the time of its making. Directed by SS Rajamouli and starring Prabhas in the lead- Baahubali did keep up to all the expectations we had and even went beyond. Baahubali - The Beginning has also won the National Award for the Best Feature Film.
5
Baahubali 2: The Conclusion
8.7OTTplay Rating
The sequel to Baahubali - The Beginning, Baahubali : The conclusion answered that one question everyone had after watching the first part- Why did Kattappa kill Baahubali? The movie broke almost all records set by its first instalment and some more. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion set the record for the highest estimated footfall for any film in India, breaking Sholay’s long lasting record. Both parts of Baahubali proved to us that if an epic period fantasy film is good enough, it will be loved by Indians no matter the language or origin of the movie.
6
Mohenjo Daro
5.5OTTplay Rating
While Mohenjo Daro was not so well received by critics and audiences when it released, it has to be noted that this movie was one of the most ambitious period films of Ashutosh Gowariker. It was neither modern history, nor medieval but the makers of Mohenjo Daro went all out to portray the life and culture during the Indus Valley Civilization. Whether Hrithik Roshan looks like a farmer from 2016 BC is arguable, but the movie was apparently made after three years of research that included archeologists and experts to authentically portray the life of an ancient civilization.
