6 Bharathiraja movies to watch on legendary director's birthday

Bharathiraja who started his filmmaking career in 1977 became an instant favourite. His knack for doing stories surrounding village lives and his ability to capture them cinematically made him cement his place in the Tamil film industry. This realistic portrayal of rural life made many of his stories relatable to the audience. From Tik Tik Tik (1981) to Kadal Pookal (2001), he has tasted success in several genres. The legendary filmmaker has won six National Film Awards and two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. 

On his birthday, let's look at six of his films available on OTT.

Mudhal Mariyathai

Starring the iconic Sivaji Ganesan and Radha, this romantic drama is a story about a village chieftain and his unhappy marriage to a young woman. A classic in many senses, Mudhal Mariyathai clocked over 200 days in the theatres after its release. It also won the National Film Award for Best Tamil Feature Film in 1986.

Oru Kaidhiyin Diary

Oru Kaidhiyin Diary is an action thriller released in 1985. A movie that brought together Kamal Haasan, Bhagyaraj, Bharathiraja and Ilaiyaraja, it was the story of David (Kamal), a convict who returns from prison to seek vengeance. Another Tamil classic is still held in high regard.

This 1994 drama has a legacy of its own. The film which stars Raja and Rajasree tells the story of a village where female infanticide is practised and accepted. The movie upon its release was greeted with critical acclaim winning many accolades including three national film awards. Karuththamma played a big role in bringing the harsh realities of female infanticide out to the world.

Written and directed by Bharathiraja, Bommalattam is an action thriller released in 2008. The movie has Arjun Sarja, Nana Patekar and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead roles. It is a swift-moving thriller set in the backdrop of the film industry. This is a whodunit that is worth the watch.
Kangalal Kaidhu Sei

Starring Vaseegaran and Priyamani, this romantic thriller marked the latter's Tamil debut. The story revolves around John Vaseegaran (Vaseegaran), who is a millionaire kleptomaniac and what happens after he steals a diamond ring. The music by A.R Rahman is one of the highlights of the movie.
