Of all the genres that have been mixed and matched, the blending of comedy and horror seems to be the most surprising. Each one is the polar opposite to the other. While one is designed to delight viewers, the other terrifies them. Such an odd combination would not seem to make any sense but the plethora of horror-comedies that have become fan favourites prove that they do indeed work well together. Some of them have even become so well loved that they spawn entire franchises. Balancing them both on the silver screen is not always an easy task and not all filmmakers have been able to strike the perfect balance between the two and manage to please and petrify audiences at the same time.

Here are a few much loved horror-comedies to watch that are sure to make viewers go through an entire spectrum of emotions with each watch...

What We Do in the Shadows
9OTTplay Rating
Based on the 2014 film of the same name, this series delves into the lives of four eccentric vampires and their human companion, as they go about their undead lives. Each of the bloodthirsty beings belong to a different era or region and have a quirky backstory to explain their personalities and disposition. The series was lauded by both critics and fans alike. Its humour and novel take on the original makes the subject worthy of widespread praise. The sharp witticisms and all the classic elements that give vampires their undeniable allure makes the show an enjoyable watch.

Sure, the zombie apocalypse is a fight for survival but there’s no rule that says it shouldn’t be fun. Zombieland tells the tale of a group of misfits from different states in the US who band together for a road trip to an amusement park, battling zombies along the way. This lively horror comedy subverts many usual tropes found in zombie movies, even turning a competition out of creatively killing the undead beings. A well told story is supplemented by some incredible performances by its stellar cast, which includes Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin.
Shaun of the Dead
7.7OTTplay Rating
A man wishing for some excitement in his mundane life gets more than he bargained for, when he wakes up to a zombie apocalypse that seemed to have taken over his town overnight. This film follows a group of friends as they try to weather out the unexpected ordeal, leading to moments filled with hilarity even in the face of their impending doom. The film was not only well received by critics but also went on to gather a large cult following.
The Cabin in the Woods
7.4OTTplay Rating
A group of friends' vacation does not go as planned since they come face-to-face with some bizarre occurrences. The group becomes subject to a sadistic experiment by scientists, where they are put through a series of odd tests which strangely resembles popular horror movie tropes. The Cabin in the Woods draws a lot of its humour in poking fun at popular horror movie tropes, in a way that is never excessive or crass. This meta-like film was lauded for its unique concept and well-written story, and its shocking ending is one even seasoned horror fans may not have any luck in predicting.
American Psycho
7.8OTTplay Rating
Another cult classic in the horror- comedy genre, American Psycho is based upon the 1991 novel of the same name. The movie tells the story of Patrick Bateman, suave investment banker by day and unhinged serial killer by night. The viewer is offered a close and personal look into the workings of the psychopath’s minds, each of his killings being a spur of the moment decision. The film etched its name in pop culture, not only gaining a huge fan following but also being alluded to in several popular music videos as well.
Jennifer's Body
5.5OTTplay Rating
High school is already a tough time for teens as is. A demonic possession leading to an unquenching thirst for blood just adds to the awkwardness. Jennifer’s Body revolves around the story of a teenage girl who is turned into a bloodthirsty demon after a group of men try to sacrifice her in a satanic ritual. When she begins to prey upon her male classmates, it's up to her shy best friend to put a stop to it. Although the film did not witness positive reviews at the time of its release, it went on to become a cult classic, with many hailing it as a revolutionary feminist horror flick.
