6 Priyadarshan movies to binge-watch as you wait to catch Hungama 2

With Priyadarshan’s soon-to-release comic caper Hungama 2, Shilpa Shetty makes her return to Hindi cinema after 14 years. The film stars Meezan Jaffrey and Pranitha Subhas in the lead, besides featuring Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Ashutosh Rana, and Johny Lever in key roles. Priyadarshan has written and directed the film that bears his signature style of light-hearted comedy. 

While you wait to watch Hungama 2 on July 23 (on Disney+ Hotstar), here are six movies by Priyadarshan that’ll keep you glued to your screens till then.

Hungama: This is the first film that you need to watch while bracing for Hungama 2. The predecessor to Hungama 2, this comedy film features Akshay Khanna, Aftab Shivdasani, Paresh Rawal and Rimi Sen. The film chronicles the story of a millionaire businessman based in a village who decides to move to the city with his wife, only to get entangled in a series of humorous situations of mistaken identity.
Hera Pheri

Hera Pheri: This well-loved and oft-cited Priyadarshan film is a remake of the 1989 Malayalam film Ramji Rao Speaking. Hera Pheri went on to become a cult classic in the comic genre and sparked a successful franchise. The plot is based on two tenants Shyam (Sunil Shetty), Raju (Akshay Kumar) and their bespectacled landlord Baburao Ganpatrao Apte (Paresh Rawal) and how luck favours them in their urgent need of money. The trio gets involved in a ransom call through cross-connection and devises a clever counter plan to claim the ransom for themselves in turn.

Hulchul: This 2004 romantic action-comedy film was adapted from the Malayalam film the Godfather. The film had an ensemble cast and was positively received by the critics. The story is about Jai and Aditi who hail from two feuding families. Jay (Akshay Khanna) and Aditi (Kareena Kapoor) pretend to be in love only to carry out a revenge plan. However, nothing goes to plan when they end up falling in love with each other. The deeply-in-love couple now decides to unite their families, which leads to a string of funny incidents.
De Dana Dan

De Dana Dan: Partly drawn from Priyadarshan’s own Malayalam film Vettam and the Hollywood movie Screwed, this 2009 comedy narrates the story of Singapore based Nitin Banker (Akshay Kumar) and Ram Mishra (Sunil Shetty). The two are rich in love but poor in bank balance. Nitin works for free for his employer Kuljeet Kaur (Archana Puran Singh), to clear his late father’s debts and the money she paid for his education. Ram works as a courier boy for a courier company in Singapore. The plot unfolds at the Pan Pacific Hotel after Nitin’s and Ram’s plans to make money to marry their girlfriends gets awry.
Garam Masala

Garam Masala: This 2005 directorial by Priyadarshan is now considered one of the best comedy films in Hindi cinema and won Akshay Kumar the Filmfare Award for the Best Actor in a Comic Role. While it is laugh-out-loud, on one hand, it is also sexist in its plot on the other. Two skirt-chasing photographers, Makarand Dindayal Chatpatiya and Shyam Salgaonkar are caught in a tussle of one-upmanship over the other. The going gets funnier when Mac three-times three trusting air hostesses in an expensive flat he manoeuvres to himself. With Mambo, a short-tempered moody housekeeper played by Paresh Rawal and Sam joining the play, everything soon turns into chaos, raising many laughs.
Yeh Teraa Ghar Yeh Meraa Ghar

Yeh Teraa Ghar Yeh Meraa Ghar: This 2010 comedy is an adaptation of the Malayalam film Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam starring Mohanlal. The film features Sunil Shetty, Mahima Chaudhry and Paresh Rawal in lead roles. The indoor comedy follows Dayashankar Manorilal Pandey who is in debt and wants to get his two sisters married. He comes to the city to have his house cleared by the tenants to sell them off and repay his debts. There he meets a Maharashtrian woman and her children Saraswati, Jyoti and Chotu. The comedy ensues when the family refuses to leave and Dayashankar is compelled to resort to comical attempts to drive them away, which also brings his childhood friend Inspector O.P. Yadav in the picture, resulting in hilarious incidents.
