A look back at Studio Ghibli’s legacy: Here are the many movies from the studio you can stream on Netflix

Studio Ghibli has mesmerised and delighted viewers with its animated works since the 1980s. Stunning visuals, wholesome storylines, heroic characters not conforming to typical clichés, are just a few attributes that have led to the studio’s works becoming a cut above the rest.

No wonder people came together in huge numbers as a part of a crowdfunding campaign to save the famous Studio Ghibli Museum in Japan from the threat of closure. To celebrate, here is a list of Studio Ghibli movies you can stream on Netflix.

Spirited Away

A young girl and her parents, while moving to their new home, discover a hidden spirit world. When a witch turns her parents into pigs, the girl takes it upon herself to find a way to bring them back; working for the witch herself. The movie has made it to many lists of all-time great animated movies besides winning an Academy Award. It was one of Japan’s highest-grossing movies at the time of release.
Howl's Moving Castle

A young hat-maker, turned into an old woman as a result of a witch’s curse, sets off on a journey to break the curse. She reaches the moving abode of a wizard and makes a deal with a fire demon working under him in exchange for breaking the woman’s curse. The film also deals with anti-war themes and director Miyazaki has described the film as one of his favourite works.
Kiki's Delivery Service

Adapted from a children’s novel of the same name, Kiki’s Delivery Service tells the story of a teen witch who leaves home with her black cat to start a life of independence. She sets her sights on a port city, where she finds a place to live and starts a business delivering packages on her broomstick
Princess Mononoke

A warrior prince, while protecting his village from a demon, is cursed. To reverse it, he travels west and reaches a forest, where a war between the forest beings and humans is on. This film also became the highest grosser in Japan in its release year.
My Neighbor Totoro

Two young girls, along with their father, move into an old house near a forest, to stay close to their ailing mother. They meet friendly spirits, and adventures follow. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, My Neighbor Totoro gathered a cult following which the film’s titular character became a mascot for Studio Ghibli.
The Tale of Princess Kaguya

Based on a 10th-century story from Japan called ‘The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter’, this movie tells the story of a bamboo cutter who finds a tiny young girl within a bamboo shoot, whom he and his wife decide to raise as their daughter. The full story of her mysterious past comes to light during the movie. This film holds the title of being the most expensive Japanese film to be released to date.
