As Space Jam: A New Legacy is out, look at films that took plunge to mix live-action and animation

Animated films have always fascinated both children and adults alike. 3D, as well as 2D characters, have also shared screens with live-action ones, resulting in a fusion of fun and memorable performances. The 1996 Space Jam is one work of art. Ahead of the release of its 2021 sequel, here are a few live-action + animated films that you can stream at your leisure.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Who Framed Roger Rabbit, arguably one of the most lauded films in the animation-live action fusion category, is the story of an investigator who is assigned the task of proving the innocence of a cartoon character accused of murder. The plot of the movie is based on a mystery novel. Its visuals and animations were widely praised and the film has bagged multiple Academy Awards.

Based on a comic strip featuring a fat, lazy, sarcastic orange cat and his docile owner, Garfield: The Movie tells the story of a pampered feline living his best life in Los Angeles. His peaceful life is thrown into chaos when his owner brings home a dog, whom Garfield takes an instant dislike to and plots to get rid of. The titular character is CGI and is voiced by Bill Murray.
Looney Tunes: Back in Action

This movie features characters from the beloved Warner Bros. animated series, Looney Tunes. The plot follows Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck teaming up with the non-animated Damian and Kate to foil the evil plan of the Acme Corporation Chairman, while also trying to free Damian’s father from the villain’s clutches.

A young bear with a penchant for marmalade makes his way to London from the jungles of Peru, in search of a new home. The film follows his stay at a loving family’s house as a guest and searches for the explorer who visited his family long ago. Paddington was a critical and commercial success, earning two BAFTA nominations as well.

The film is based on the lead character from the Casper the Friendly Ghost cartoon series. Casper strays from its fully animated version, by exploring dark themes such as death, grief and sacrifice. It tells the story of a young ghost living in a manor with his ghost uncles, who falls in love with a human girl who moves into the house with her father. The movie spawned two sequels and a television spin-off. It is also regarded as the first film to feature a fully CGI protagonist.
Alvin and the Chipmunks

This American live-action/animated film features several catchy musical numbers. It follows the story of three chipmunks who become singing sensations when their talent is discovered by Dave, a songwriter. Although most reviews were negative, the film went on to do well commercially.
