Sarpatta Parambarai will be released on July 22 on Amazon Prime. Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film is a period piece featuring Arya in lead role as a Madurai boxer named Kabilan and Pasupathy in a supporting role as coach Rangan Vaathiyar.Over the years, Tamil cinema has produced several engaging sports movies that have thrilled the audience with its action as well as emotion. Before catching up with Arya’s upcoming film, revisit some of the Tamil sports films which became people’s favorite.

Starring Jai, Shiva and Nithin in lead roles, the film tells the story of rivalry between two local cricket teams. Raghu(Jai) joins an opposing team when his teammates replace him with a newcomer. Now he has to make sure that his team will win the match. Although he finds his teammates weird and quirky, gradually he builds rapport with them and wins the match.

Ethir Neechal is more in the comedy-sports-drama genre. It narrates the story of Harish/Kunjithapatham ( Sivakarthikeyan) who decides to participate in the acclaimed Chennai Marathon. Harish has only run away from responsibilities till then, now he has to run to prove to his love that he is responsible. Priya Anand plays the love interest of Sivakarthikeyan.

Jeeva is a youngster who is adamant about joining the Indian cricket team someday. Played by Vishnu Vishal in a naive yet charming manner, Jeeva narrates the story in a sports-romance-drama format. Here also the protagonist is addressing the caste politics which exists in Indian sports councils.

One cannot talk about boxing films without mentioning Sudha Kongara’s sports-drama starring debutant Ritika Singh and R Madhavan. Ritika plays Ezhil Madhi, a street-side fish seller who has an innate talent in fighting and the disgraced coach Prabhu Selvaraj, played by Madhavan recognises this and takes her on as an apprentice. Together they have to face troubles inside and outside the ring.

The movie features Aishwarya Rajesh in the lead role as Kousalya, a rural girl who aims to be an international cricketer. She is supported by her poor but doting father Murugesan (Sathyaraj). She has to fight stereotypes and internal politics in her pursuit of her dream. Sivakarthikeyan plays an extended cameo as coach Nelson.

Peter lies to his lover Yazhini that he is a boxer, when he doesn’t even know the basics. He is also slacking off in training. In the ring, he uses his skill to dodge and evade pouches to win the match. But what happens when he is challenged by a formidable boxer? Will he change himself? Or will he be beaten to pulp? Maybe both. Maan Karate is a humorous take on boxing with comedians like Sathish, Soori and Yogi Babu in the cast.
