Mohanlal and Meena

Few know that Mohanlal and Meena have been part of movies that had redefined Malayalam cinema, be it in terms of spawning superhits, setting records in the box office and OTT space or even ushering in a new era of filmmakers. The veteran duo, who have acted together in over 10 movies, have always managed to entertain the audience whenever they came together. They are next set to star as a couple in Prithviraj Sukumaran’s much-awaited Bro Daddy, which is set to release on Disney+ Hotstar on January 26. While the film promises to be a fun treat, catch these other movies that have Mohanlal and Meena at their best.

The IV Sasi directorial, which was shot in Singapore and Kerala, had Mohanlal playing a wealthy businessman named Sunny who falls for Sandra. He decides to get married to her but he soon finds out that the latter is an escort hired by his rival. The film had Meena take up a role that many lead actresses would have shunned during the late 90s. Through the role, she once again proved she could ace both urban and rustic roles.
The first intalment of Jeethu Joseph’s franchise had Mohanlal and Meena playing Georgekutty and Rani George, a husband and wife who lead a peaceful life till an outsider threatens their family. Their dynamics is also what made the audience care for the couple, even though they were on the wrong side of the law.
Drishyam 2
If Drishyam was more Mohanlal’s film, its sequel, which revolved around the cops finding out the body and apprehending the prime suspect Georgekutty, also provided ample scope for Meena to perform. The actress embodied the trauma and guilt that came with covering up a crime and living with the secret for years together, while her husband remained non-communicative to protect the family.
The film, which was one of Mohanlal’s final larger-than-life characters in the 2000s, had the duo sharing a different equation. Meena played the character of Mohanlal’s childhood love Indu, who was married to his friend. As Chirackal Sreehari, Mohanlal straddled the ‘mass’ hero image while also adding emotional depth to his character who is blamed for a murder he didn’t commit and has to endure loss.
Udayananu Tharam
The dark comedy, directed by Rosshan Andrrews and scripted by Sreenivasan, provided a new lease of life to Malayalam cinema in 2005. Serving as a mirror to the film industry’s state, the movie revolved around an aspiring director, Udayabhanu, who is set to helm his first film. But his friend steals his script to become a superstar. Meena plays Udayabhanu’s actress wife in the movie, which was a superhit and was remade in Tamil as Velli Thirai and in Hindi as Shortkut.
Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol
This family entertainer revolves around a middle-aged panchayat secretary, Ullahanan, who rekindles excitement in his two-decade-old martial life after a college reunion. He soon finds a renewed purpose and sees the joy in the people and things that he had taken for granted. It’s the chemistry between Ullahanan and Meena’s Annie that make the scenes between the duo a joy to watch in this Jibu Jacob directorial.
