Bigg Boss to Comedy Stars: Best Malayalam reality shows to watch on OTTs while you relax

After a long day of work it’s always nice to unwind with some light entertainment. Reality shows offer just that, a refreshing form of escape from the monotony of the daily grind. The drama, fun and, at times, conflict these shows offer are something a lot of viewers cherish and cannot get enough of. And show runners make sure that they bring to the screen exactly that. Here is a list of Malayalam reality shows whose popularity has stood the test of time.

A Malayalam adaptation of the British game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Ningalkum Aakam Kodeeshwaran is a widely popular show where contestants answer questions to win big money. There are 15 questions in all, the initial ones having a timer. Answer all of them correctly, and the winner is offered a whopping one crore as the grand prize. The show is hosted by Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi.

Bigg Boss is watching you! Developed along the lines of the Dutch show Big Brother, the show involves 15 people living together for 100 days in a custom built house. The contestants are under constant surveillance and each person is also fixed with a microphone as well.The only communication with the outside world they have is through an anonymous entity dubbed Bigg Boss, to whom they can voice their concerns. Every week participants vote on whom to ‘evict’. When five of them remain, a public vote decides the winner. Cine star Mohanlal serves as the show’s host.
Comedy Stars
A comedy reality series, the show involves several teams of contestants, each having four members, who perform comedy sketches developed by them. According to the quality of their performances, the teams are awarded marks by a panel of judges, most of the time involving seasoned comedians. Which teams move onto the subsequent rounds is determined by a combination of judge’s scores and public votes. The show has managed to put forth several rib tickling and memorable sketches.
D4 Dance
A dance reality show where 18 contestants battled it out for a cash prize of Rs 50 lakh, this beloved show had a successful run for several seasons. The 18 are picked after rigorous rounds of auditions, where judges award them points on the basis of their performances. Owing to its popularity, a reboot was also aired with previous contestants returning.
Sell Me the Answer
A Malayalam adaptation of the British reality show of the same name, Sell me the answer is a unique take on the normal question-and-answer format of game shows. A player starts with a specific sum of money, to earn which they have to answer a series of questions and advance to the next round, to play for a larger amount. A number of people serve as ‘traders’ to help out the contestant in case they do not know the answer. The contestant can ‘buy’ the answer from a trader, after a haggle to determine a price. Veteran Malayalam actor Mukesh is the game show host.
Star Singer
This popular singing competition offers a stage for singers between the ages of 15 to 35 years to display their vocal prowess and stage presence. Veterans in the music industry serve as judges, who evaluate performances of the contestants and assign them scores. Public voting determines who among the contestants move forward to the subsequent rounds.
