Birthday special: Most powerful roles portrayed by Bhumi Pednekar

Jul 16, 2021
Bhumi Pednekar in Durgamati.

Bhumi Pednekar celebrates her 32nd birthday on July 18. The actress, who has been in Bollywood for half a decade, has brought about a change like no other.

She has picked up roles that have a lot of depth and character. In short, Bhumi has played a powerful woman almost every time she picked a film.

Here’s proof of that:

Dum Laga Ke Haisha
7.9OTTplay Rating
In her debut film, Bhumi played an overweight woman who is constantly ridiculed by society. While playing such a character, she did not have an iota of apprehension about her appearance, which was the strongest point of the script. It was also something that was accepted and loved by people the most.
Toilet: Ek Prem Katha
7.5OTTplay Rating
In Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Bhumi played the role of a woman who forced her husband to adapt to newer ways. She pushed him to the extent that he built a toilet not only for his own house but encouraged everyone in the village to do the same. She won as a woman, a wife and a human, all thanks to that gesture.
Lust Stories
6.8OTTplay Rating
Women, especially of the lower caste, are mistreated. Bhumi, in the role of Sudha, portrays that beautifully. What’s even more beautiful is the fact that Sudha had the guts to finish off a chapter and walk off proudly. That is what makes Bhumi’s character in Lust Stories special and powerful.
Saand Ki Aankh
7.6OTTplay Rating
Not everybody can play Shooter Dadi’s role. Only actors like Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar, who aren’t confined to a particular image and are open to play any role on a given day, could have pulled it off. Bhumi, especially, has often portrayed herself as a woman who takes charge onscreen and Saand Ki Aankh is a perfect showcase of her talent.
7OTTplay Rating
Bala saw Bhumi and Ayushmann Khurrana be their bold selves on screen. While Ayushmann fought off his demons which made him choose between hiding his ‘bald’ reality and being proud of it, Bhumi played a woman who gained confidence despite her dark skin colour and constant societal pressure to ‘look fair and lovely’.
Durgamati : The Myth
3.9OTTplay Rating
In the remake of Anushka Shetty’s Durgavati, Bhumi Pednekar played the lead role of Durgamati who went to great lengths to fight off the evil. That is the strength of Goddess Durga right there.
