Devasuram to Nayattu: Check out these Malayalam movies that were inspired from real life stories

Mollywood has some interesting biopics like Aami and Captain (based on writer Madhavikutty’s and footballer V P Sathyan’s lives respectively), which were lauded by the critics. Similarly, there have been instances where real life stories were made into films. Some of them succeeded in evoking a special interest among film buffs - a few among them have won big at the box office as well. From the iconic film Devasuram to the recently released Nayattu, check out some popular movies in Malayalam which were inspired from real life stories.

Mohanlal’s iconic character Mangalassery Neelakandan from this I.V Sasi-directorial is inspired from a real-life person, named Mullassery Rajagopal, who was a popular figure in Kozhikode. Ranjith, who had written the film’s screenplay, had said that its story was based on the love story of Rajagopal and his wife. Apart from Mohanlal, Revathy, Napoleon, Innocent, Nedumudi Venu, Maniyanpilla Raju and Cochin Haneefa are a few other actors who appear in prominent roles in the film.

The superhit investigative thriller helmed by K Madhu is based on the infamous Abhaya Murder Case of 1992, which is regarded as one of the most controversial cases in the history of Kerala. It revolves around the death of a Catholic nun in her convent and the investigation that follows. Sangita has played the female lead in the film which has Suresh Gopi, Siddique, Rajan P Dev, Kalabhavan Mani and Janardhanan appear in pivotal roles.

This Mammootty-starrer, directed by Ranjith, is based on the murder of a young girl, which is also considered as the first sexual harrassment case in Kerala’s history. The film received much appreciation for the raw portrayal of incidents and outstanding performances of the actors. Apart from Mammootty, who donned three roles, the cast of the movie includes Mythili, Shwetha Menon and Siddique.

This Prithviraj-starrer, directed by Kamal, is based on the life of J.C Daniel, who is regarded as the father of Malayalam cinema. The movie narrates the struggles of the filmmaker, who made the first Malayalam movie, Vigathakumaran. His early days and the societal backlash he faced because of casting P K Rosie, an actress who belonged to a lower caste, were also touched upon in the film. Mamta Mohandas played the female lead in the film which had Chandni Geetha playing the role of PK Rosie.

The tragic love story of Moideen and Kanchanamala in the film is based on a real life incident that took place in the ‘60s. The R S Vimal-directorial stars Prithviraj and Parvathi Thiruvothu in the lead. The movie, which was widely appreciated for its beautiful narration and realistic portrayal of events, was a big success at the box office, too.

Shahi Kabir, the writer of the movie, has revealed that the film’s story was inspired by true incidents he got to know from his seniors during his career in the Police department. The movie revolves around the struggle of three police officers who happen to be a part of an unexpected crime and their attempts to save themselves from getting nabbed. Kunchacko Boban, Nimisha Sajayan and Joju George have played lead roles in this Martin Prakkat-directorial.
