Eddie Redmayne is definitely one of the finest talents in present day Hollywood, one who does not shy away from experimenting and exploring the waters despite his star status. Through the span of his two decade long career, Redmayne has proved that he is not one to be put into a box with the sheer versatility of the roles he has taken in his stride.

From thrillers to period dramas to biopics, the actor has essayed a plethora of characters that would test the limits of any seasoned star. Be it a tragic trans icon, a brilliant physicist with a deteriorating physique or even a sophisticated young wizard on the cusp of achieving greatness- Redmayne slips into each role like a second skin. So it comes as no wonder that the star has earned numerous accolades to his name in his journey, including the prestigious Academy Award.

As the star turns another year around the sun, here are a few roles where he excelled and gave some memorable and touching performances.

The Danish Girl
Danish artist Lili Elbe was a trailblazer in the trans community, becoming one of the first people to get gender affirmation surgery. Although it takes creative liberties, The Danish Girl explores Elbe’s tumultuous life; from struggling to come to terms with her identity to the impact it had on her relationships. Redmayne stars as Elbe, his casting courting controversy over a cisgender man playing a trans woman’s role. But despite it all, his performance was lauded for authentically capturing the raw emotions of the character, and the actor received a nomination for an Academy Award.
The Theory Of Everything
Follow the story of one of the greatest scientific minds of the 21st century as he overcame massive personal struggles to achieve greatness. This 2014 film details the life of one of the world’s most renowned physicists Stephen Hawking who, despite being affected with ALS went on to make groundbreaking discoveries even while his body was slowly deteriorating. Redmayne essays Hawking’s role, his raw portrayal spectacularly capturing the genius’ heartbreaking transition, as he grapples through his illness without easing off on his research even for a moment. The actor was lauded for his role, earning an Academy Award for the same.
Les Misérables
Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables has witnessed several silver screen adaptations spawning over decades since the 1930s. Tom Hooper’s 2012 film adaptation brought the historical novel alive in the form of an epic musical dotted with a stellar ensemble. Set in 19th century France, the story follows Jean Valjean, an imprisoned thief who tries to turn his life around after receiving an unexpected kindness from a Bishop. Redmayne stars as Marius Pontmercy, a student and revolutionary. The actor’s performance, his powerful vocals and the way he nailed his character’s intense passions were the subject of praise.
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them
J.K. Rowling’s silver screen already epic wizarding world got a bit more fantastical with the Fantastic Beasts film series. This 2016 film, based on the author’s book of the same name, is set decades before the events of Harry Potter and follows the adventures of Newt Scamander, a wizard at the Ministry of Magic. Redmayne portrays Scamander making the role his own with his subtle and nuanced portrayal of the introverted young wizard just coming to realise his full potential. The actor went on to reprise his roles in the 2018 sequel and will also be seen in the upcoming film Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
My Week with Marilyn
The iconic Marilyn Monroe’s life was rife with trials and tribulations which have found their way onto the screen in numerous adaptations. My Week with Marilyn explores a particular time in the late actress’ life which involved her interactions with actor director Laurence Olivier on the sets of the film The Prince and the Showgirl. Redmayne essays the role of Colin Clark who was tasked with accompanying the late star around London during the course of the shoot, his closeness to star giving him a rare insight into her life. Redmayne’s chemistry with his co-star Michelle Williams and his portrayal of the real life figure earned him praise.
