If you’re one of those people who find it hard to start and stick to a long drawn out show, then anthologies would definitely be a godsend for you. Gone are the days when one has to forcefully rouse oneself to attention watching shows which might prove to be an unworthy contender of your precious times. From dragging its story, to realising it isnt to your taste after you are halfway through, there may be several reasons why long form series’ may not appeal to viewers.

That’s the beauty of anthologies, with their conclusive storylines perfect for the impatient viewer, they have definitely gained traction in recent times leading to an array of shows across different genres.

Here are a few English language anthologies spanning genres such as romance, horror and sci-fi, that every anthology fan should check out.

Modern Love

As its title suggests, this anthology series focuses on stories revolving around love and romance. Instead of limiting itself with the concept of romantic love, the show chose to expand the meaning of the term beyond what is ordinarily seen in love stories. Each episode deals with different kinds of love, such as familial, platonic and even self love, through the stories of a variety of characters. The series was inspired by a weekly column in The New York Times of the same name.

American Horror Story

American Horror Story revolves around different stories of the horror genres, with each season having its own standalone premise. The seasons are set in different time periods and locations and each deal with a specific theme- such as stories centred around cults, witches, serial killers and haunted houses. Most seasons also feature recurring stars such as Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson,Jessica Lange and Lily Rabe, who play different characters in different seasons. With intriguing storylines, some inspired by true events, stellar performances and scares that would shake even the steeliest of nerves, the show is a must watch for horror fans.

Black Mirror

A sci-fi show with human emotion at its centre, Black Mirror is set in a futuristic world, wherein scientific advancements have vastly shaped normal human life. Unlike most media centred around technological advances, the series does not always give the message of a cautionary tale around letting technology getting away from mankind. Even when it does, it does so through nuanced and subtle storylines, and eventually it is human emotion that ultimately serves as the undoing. The series has received widespread adulation and accolades, including Emmy Awards.

True Detective

This crime drama series follows the stories of law enforcement authorities who have to deal with some of the most unsettling and difficult cases of their careers. Each season takes place in different regions of the United States and follows the stories of different teams of detectives as they grapple with investigations that test them physically, mentally and emotionally. The positively reviewed series starred some notable Hollywood names such as Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Mahershala Ali.

Love Death + Robots

This adult animated series is a mesh of stories that span across a plethora of genres ranging from comedy to horror to fantasy to science fiction. Each episode is under 20 minutes long having different styles of animation with the changing crew of animators each had. Most of the standalone stories feature grim, pessimistic endings and centre around fantasy and sci-fi elements.The third season or volume of Love, Death & Robots is scheduled to be released some time this year.
