Films that will tell you Beyonce is a force to be reckoned with, both in the music and film industry

Beyoncé Knowles is arguably one of the biggest names in the music industry. She has made a name for herself both as a solo artist and a part of the famous girl group Destiny’s Child and has a string of accomplishments to her name that just keep growing, not to mention her much-lauded visually stunning albums. From being one of the best selling recording artists across the globe to winning over 25 Grammy Awards, she has rightfully earned her place on Time magazine's list of women who defined the last century. But not one to be limited, the singer has also made a powerful foray into acting, taking charge on screen as well as she does on stage.

As proof of the star’s multidimensional talent, here are a few films featuring the actress-singer that showcase her immense skills.

How far can someone go in the name of unrequited love? Obsessed explores it through its three characters - a happily married man, his doting wife and a woman obsessed with the former, who will go to any lengths to win his affections. Beyoncé plays the role of the man’s loving wife, whose faith in her husband is eroded as a result of the stalker’s schemes. Although the film was criticized for its unexplored potential and shallow characters, a climactic fight scene between the two female leads received much praise.

A fictional retelling of the rise of a real-life American musical girl group, Dreamgirls is a film graced by not only good storytelling but terrific musical numbers. It tells the story of the evolution of R&B music in America, through the tale of an all-girl group consisting of three black singers who call themselves the Dream. Beyoncé shines as a prominent member of the group, a shy, yet talented young woman who finds her voice and stands up for herself in front of a manipulative husband. The musical numbers of the film, which fully showcased the stars' vocals, were also lauded.
Cadillac Records

A biographical drama, Cadillac Records is set in the period from the 1940s to 1960s in Chicago and tells the tale of Leonard Chess, the founder and executive director of the American record company Chess Records, which focuses on blues and R&B music. The film features the journey of several popular American artists who were attached to the label at the time. Beyoncé captures the essence of Etta James, bringing the soulful singer and her music alive on screen with her portrayal. The actress’ performance and vocals were one of the film’s highlights, as agreed upon by fans and critics alike.
The Pink Panther

Based on the fan-favourite The Pink Panther movie franchise, focussing on the blunders and adventures of the brilliant yet clumsy French detective Jacques Clouseau, this 2006 movie follows a bumbling inspector as he is tasked with solving the murder of a football coach and locating the missing titular gemstone. Beyoncé stars as the grieving girlfriend of the victim, whom the detective suspects to have some secrets that she is not letting in on. The actress’ performance oozes charm and sophistication, which will make anyone, not just Clouseau, fall head over heels in love with her.
Austin Powers in Goldmember

Featuring Beyoncé in her theatrical movie debut, Austin Powers in Goldmember is a spy comedy and a parody of the James Bond film Goldfinger, which follows the adventures of its titular character Austin Powers as he faces off against the aptly named Dr Evil, his brother and rival. In the current film, the villain kidnaps their father, forcing our hero to travel back in time to save him. Beyoncé shines as the spy’s new sidekick, Foxxy Cleopatra. The actress-singer also has one of her songs featured in the film’s soundtrack, Work It Out, with its retro style gaining the adoration of fans.
The Lion King

With stunning visuals and top-tier CGI that’ll transport you to the African Savannah, The Lion King is a remake of the 1994 Disney animated classic of the same name. This 2019 musical drama features a stellar voice cast of seasoned performers and went on to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The character of Nala, emulated by Beyoncé, the young heir’s beloved, who tries to convince him to return to his homeland, was given a much bigger role than in the original to fully make use of the actress’ talent. Not only did the actress-singer give it her all in voice acting, but she also contributed to the film’s soundtrack, reworking it and writing a new song titled ‘Spirit ’for the same, which became an instant hit with both critics and fans alike.
