Joseph Gordon-Levitt no doubt stole our hearts with his acting as Tom Hansen, a lovable romantic in 500 Days of Summer, who was paired opposite Zooey Deschanel. He is not only a talented actor but a director and writer as well. Apart from acting in fictional roles, the actor has essayed various roles based on real personalities in many biopics.

The Trial of the Chicago 7

Inspired by the real life events that led up to the 1969 trial of seven defendants in the US, Levitt essays the role of assistant federal prosecutor. This court drama was nominated for various awards, including the Academy Award nominations. The Aaron Sorkin directorial traced the 1968 uprising at the Democratic National Convention in Illinois.

In a genuine portrayal of a porn addict, Joseph Gordon-Levitt directs, writes and stars in this rom-com in the titular role. The film alo stars some of Hollywood's crème de la crème including Scarlett Johansson, Juliaane Moore and Brie Larson. The movie follows Don Jon as he battles his porn addiction and playboy ways to establish a committed relationship with Barbara (Scarlet Johansson).

This Rian Johnson science-fiction directorial saw Levitt essay the role of Joe. He is a “looper” who is hired by crime syndicates from the future to dispatch people the syndicates send back in time. Looper is undoubtedly a riveting movie, bound to thrill you and give goosebumps. It also stars Emily Blunt and Bruce Willis.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt essays the role of Adam, who is suffering from a rare cancer and has limited time to live. The movie is anything but depressing, which might be the first thought upon hearing the plot line. The Jonathan Levine directorial is heartwarming and poignant with a nuanced take on the topic, interspersed with jokes and finding the true meaning of friendship along the way.

If you haven’t watched Nolan’s mind bending flick, you might want to correct that immediately. Even with a star-studded cast which includes Leanardo DCaprio, Cilian Murphy, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine and Marion Cotillard, Levitt shines as Arthur. He is Cobb’s (DiCaprio) partner in this science fiction movie. Reportedly, Levitt had performed most of the action sequences in the film.

In this biopic based upon Philippe Petit’s life, Levitt essays the role of a French high wire artist named Petit. He had successfully attempted a tightrope walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The Robert Zemeckis directorial is plot-driven for most but soon descends into the thrilling nail biting territory.

It is always a thrill to watch a movie set in an airplane 30000 ft. above ground, with no exits. Levitt essays the role of First Officer Tobia Ellis, a pilot aboard flight A319. After the plane takes off, a group of terrorists hold the plane hostage. What follows is a nail biting action saga.
