The world war era was one of the bleakest times in our history. Pop culture, including books, movies, series etc. provides a glimpse into those times in an interesting, non-boring manner, both enlightening us and to an extent, entertaining us with their production value. 

This genre has a non-exhaustive list of movies, spanning over various sub-genres like political, action, spy thriller and even science fiction. 

We are counting some of our picks of movies set in the backdrop of world wars that are available for streaming on OTT platforms.

A Call to Spy

In this female-led ensemble, this historical drama chronicles the lives of three women spies in France, who helped the allied powers in turning the tide of the war against Axis forces to their advantage. Inspired by true stories, Radhika Apte essays the famous spy of Indian origin, Noor Inayat Khan. Vera Atkins, the British-born intelligence officer, a “spymistress” is portrayed by Stana Katic of the Castle series fame. Meanwhile, Sarah Megan Thomas plays Virginia Hall, another spy.

Taika Waititi’s directorial is a sartorial portrayal of the Nazi rule under Adolf Hitler from the eyes of a young child, Jojo, whose staunch beliefs are deeply rooted in Nazism. Jojo has an imaginary friend in a humorous caricature of Adolf Hitler, essayed by Waititi. Due to certain circumstances, Jojo’s beliefs are shaken and he starts questioning everything he has been taught. A humorous and poignant tale.
Inglourious Basterds

Quentin Tarantino’s directorial features an impressive star-studded cast including Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Diane Kruger, Melanie Laurent, Michael Fassbender and more. Laurent essays Shosanna Dreyfus, eager to take her vengeance on a German officer and a group of Britishers who want to assassinate the leadership of Nazi Germany. Meanwhile, a team of Jewish American soldiers led by Brad Pitt are gearing to take down the Nazi regime.
The Catcher Was a Spy

Inspired by true events, this thriller follows Paul Rudd as Moe Berg, an erstwhile baseball player and a spy currently, sent behind enemy lines in Europe. His mission involves assassinating the chief nuclear scientist who is behind the development of an atomic bomb.
Schindler's List

Liam Neeson essays the titular character, Oskar Schindler, a rich industrialist, who takes it upon himself to save as many Jews as possible from persecution under the Nazi regime. Recipient of several awards, including the Academy Awards across various categories, the Steven Spielberg directorial features Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes. It is a beautiful and poignant tale of humanity wherein, Schindler saved more than a thousand Jews.
