From Okkadu to Pokiri, these Mahesh Babu movies sparked multiple remakes

Mahesh Babu is one of the biggest stars in the Telugu film industry. The actor who made his introduction as a child artiste, made his debut with Rajakumarudu in 1999. One of the reasons he is a superstar is that the audience has faith in his script selection and movie. His films often deal with subjects that can be related to audiences of different regions and languages, and consequently these have been remade in other languages too. Movies like Okkadu and Pokiri were remade into multiple languages with the latter producing two stellar hit remakes - Vijay’s Pokkiri and Salman Khan’s Wanted. On his birthday, here are six Mahesh Babu-starrers that were remade into other languages.

Nandu (Mahesh Babu) is a a hitman who is hired by a crooked politician (Sayaji Shinde) to stage a fake murder attempt, in order to get sympathy votes for an upcoming election. However, the politician is actually murdered as someone else pulls the trigger and Nandu is forced to be on the run as he is framed. In a train, he meets Parthu (Rajiv Kanakala), who is returning home after having run away as a child, and is killed in the next station in a crossfire. Nandu goes to Parthu’s home where he takes on the dead man’s identity and decides to uncover the truth and prove his innocence. Athadu was remade into Hindi as Ek and in Bengali as Wanted.

Pandu is a gun for hire with killer instincts and no fear. He has surfaced and has been on a roll. The police want him for questioning and other goons want him by his side to silence their rivals. While his past is unknown to all, he has made a lot of noise and is attracting a lot of heat, especially from a corrupt cop and a big time don. Written and directed by Puri Jagannadh, Pokiri is an action thriller that is must watch with its action scenes, great performances and its twists. It was remade into Tamil as Pokkiri starring Vijay, in Hindi as Wanted starring Salman Khan and in Kannada as Porki starring Darshan, all of which were superhits.

Shankar Narayana (Prakash Raj) is a politician with ideals and puts the people ahead of everything. He meets with an unfortunate accident. Years later, his son Ajay (Mahesh Babu) is now a police officer on a mission. He plans on bringing down Don Nayak (Sonu Sood). When Ajay learns about his involvement in his fathers accident, he plots to take everyone involved with it. Meanwhile, his father wakes up from a coma and Ajay does his best to hide the realities to his father and creates a fake world around his father to save him from shock. A blend of action, comedy and family drama, Dookudu is a pure entertainer. It was remade into Bangali as Challenge 2 and in Kannada as Power.

Surya (Mahesh Babu) is ambitious and arrives in Mumbai with the aim of becoming “Bhai” for the city and ruling Mumbai. He starts changing his Dharavi-based friends into his goons until he attracts police attention. As Surya makes his climb, he is arrested for a shootout. He returns, strengthening his position and we slowly understand his real intentions. Directed by Puri Jagannadh, Businessman became a big hit and was remade in Bengali as Boss.

Ajay (Mahesh Babu) is a kabbadi player who has to hide his talent and passion for the game because of his disciplinarian police father. During his time at Kurnool for a tournament, he saves Swapna (Bhumika Chawla) from Obul Reddy (Prakash Raj), a dangerous leader. He returns to his home with Swapna and has to hide her from his family. Swapna is captured by Obul, and Ajay will have to find a way to rescue her. Okkadu was a smashing hit and was made into many languages like in Tamil as Ghilli, Kannada as Ajay, Hindi as Tevar and Bengali as Jor.
7.1OTTplay Rating
Venkateswarlu (Ranganath) is a firefighter who is killed by Devudu (Gopichand), a mafia leader's right hand. Seetaram (Mahesh Babu) is Venkateswarlu’s son and his mother, having faced severe injustice and losing a loved one, decide to avenge the death. The two scientifically make a plan to kill everyone involved one after the other. The action thriller was remade into Odia as Arjuna starring Anubhav Mohanty.
