Double roles in films can either double the entertainment factor or sometimes, even tank it. But making a film with actors playing multiple roles is a bold move. Often used for humour or to represent identical twins, portraying double roles is tricky, not just for the director but also for the actor. Despite the challenge of getting into the skin of multiple characters and performing, there are several examples, especially in Mayalama cinema, where actors have given tremendous performances and the films have scored well at the box office.

Here are some brilliant Malayalam movies with double roles that is sure to get you hooked

Superstar Mohanlal has always wooed his audience with his incredible performances. He has proved his prowess again with a double role in this drama. Mohanlal’s appeal as a mass hero gets cemented even deeper into the hearts of Malayalis with his unapologetic character Mangalaseri Karthikeyan who drives around the village in his Toyota Prado. A sequel to the blockbuster movie, Devasuran, Mohanlal appears in a double role in the film, reprising his father Mangalasseri Neelakandan from the prequel. He plays the role of both the father and the son. The blend of style and mass appeal really did work in favour of the actor and the movie directed by Ranjith was well-received too. In fact, it went on to become the highest grossing Malayalam film of the year.

Dileep’s name has been synonymous with Malayalam comedies. In this comedy too, where the actor plays a dual role of brothers, he managed to set a laughing riot for his audience with his comedic timing. The story revolves around the brothers with the younger one being severely autistic. Dileep initially does not like his long-lost German brother but as he’s forced to take care of him, they develop a special bond. Dileep yet again surprises the audience with his seamless transformation and performance as an autistic man.
Maya Mayooram
6.4OTTplay Rating
This Sibi Malayil movie had Mohanlal in a double role who enacted the role of twin brothers. But, both the characters never appear together on the screen which might have made it slightly easier for the director and the actor to essay the roles. Megastar Mohanlal did put up a convincing performance as two brothers who are diametrically opposite to each other. While one is fun, charming, and enjoys playing pranks, the other has a more mature and serious personality. The film was released in 1993 and the movie was dearly loved by many.
Dileep who is called as the ‘Janapriya nayakan’ (favourite hero of the public) is really flexible when it comes to transforming himself into a completely different look/role. Dileep’s transformation for the movie Kunjikoonan was one of his best double role movies. Dileep plays the role of Kunjan, a typical villager with a hunchback who is upset that no girl would marry him, and the role of a macho and violent college guy. The contrast in his character is evidently visible when the actor transforms to Kunjan with a hunchback, fake teeth, and weird hair style. His body language and dialogue delivery in the movie is quite exemplary. The film gained so much popularity that it was later remade into Kannada, Tamil and Odia films.
