From Thillu Mullu to Nanban, here are 6 memorable films by top stars in Tamil without any action sequences

Baasha for Rajni, Dasavatharam for Kamal, Pokkiri for Vijay and Ghajini for Suriya - these are the films that we constantly get back to while discussing our favourite action stars. Their roles in the film were so good that they created a deep impression in our minds. And there are a few actor’s films which we love without even a single stunt and have succeeded in entertaining us. Here are a few films of mass heroes which everyone loves despite the lack of action.

This 1981 film stars Rajnikanth and Madhavi in lead roles directed by K. Balachander is still considered as one of the best comedies ever made in Tamil cinema. The film stars Rajnikanth as Chandran who under certain circumstances had to lie about having a twin brother to cover up his mistakes. He works under Sriramachandramurthy, a man who holds traditions and etiquette dear to him. To convince him, Chandran makes up a story of a spoiled twin brother Indran. Indran (or Chandran in guise) is then hired to teach Sriramachandramurthy’s daughter Sarojini (Madhavi), who falls for him. The film is famous for its interview scene and the SPB song “Raagangal Pathinaaru”. There is also a notable cameo by Kamal Haasan as an advocate.

This film boasts of an ensemble cast including Mammootty, Ajith Kumar, Tabu and Aishwarya Rai. Directed by Rajiv Menon, the film tells the story of people who are in love but don't dare to express it. Bala ( Mammootty), a Major who lost his leg in a war, is now a flower shop owner and loves Meenakshi (Aishwarya Rai), who only sees him as a friend and falls in love with another. In another story arc, Manohar (Ajith) falls in love with Sowmya (Tabu) but several misunderstandings prevent them from uniting. Are the couples destined to be together?

An unofficial remake of the Hollywood movie I am Sam by A.L.Vijay, the film stars Vikram as an intellectually disabled Krishna who lives with his daughter Nila (Sara Arjun). Krishna lives for his daughter. Nila coincidentally meets her aunt Shweta (Amala Paul) and the latter is shocked. She wants to take Nila away from Krishna and give her a better life. Krishna is helped by Anuradha, a budding advocate who is moved by the story. There is a moving court scene where the father-daughter thread is beautifully depicted.

In this Selvaraghavan movie, Dhanush stars as a struggling yet talented photographer who is yet to be recognised. He gets depressed about not getting deserved credit, losing his will and turning to alcohol. This in turn ruins his career and personal life. Then he starts abusing his wife Yamini. Soon, he realises the need to stand tall and fight for his career.

This 2012 movie directed by Shankar is the remake of the 2009 Bollywood blockbuster 3 Idiots starring Aamir Khan. In Nanban, Vijay plays Panchavan Parivendan while Jiiva and Srikanth play Senthil and Venkat Ramakrishnan respectively. The three are classmates and best friends. Only Pari (Vijay) possesses the potential to become an engineer. But he disappears on their graduation day without saying goodbye. Years later, Senthil and Venkat go in search of Pari.

Papanasam is the Tamil remake of the 2013 Malayalam release Drishyam. Kamal Haasan plays Suyambulingam while Gautami plays Rani, his wife. Rani and their daughter Selvi accidentally kill a blackmailer and Suyambulingam takes it on himself to “protect his family”. Suyambulingam is armed with his knowledge of crime movies and his reasoning. After the release of Papanasam, there were many debates in the Tamil and Malayalam movie circles comparing the acting mettle of two geniuses from different industries.
