Most of us love watching horror movies - a cosy, exciting night with our buddies, partner or family - a horror movie screening makes for a perfect evening to sit back and enjoy. Mike Flanagan is a name to reckon with among the horror movie lovers as he has pulled off a few amazing works that have definitely put him on the map. His works are considered to be different from other mainstream horror movies and the unique element in his movies distinguishes him from other filmmakers.

1

Gerald's Game

6.9
For a long time, Gerald’s Game was considered as one of Stephen King’s most ‘unfilmable’ movies because the whole story just revolves in and around a single room leaving us wondering as to what extent can we just shoot in one room. But thanks to an emotional rollercoaster of a performance by Carla Gugino in the lead role - backed up ably by a supporting turn from Bruce Greenwood - and some really great manipulation of reality by Mike Flanagan, Gerald's Game turned out to be one of the most faithful, and impressive adaptations of King.

Hush

7.1
The movie revolves around a deaf woman who is targeted by a crazy killer. Though the movie is violent in nature, it isn’t one of those insanely gory films; the sequences which involve killings are graphic and presented convincingly. The film keeps you on the edge till the end making you root for the woman to face her struggles boldly. The film comes across as an engaging watch, thanks to the interesting mix of mystery and suspense.

Ouija: Origin of Evil

6.4
This movie is considered to be one of Flanagan’s smart and creepy prequels. He has incorporated relatable characters in it, which is one of the major reasons behind the film’s quality output. It has many mainstream horror movie elements, but what stands out is the prequel. The screenplay succeeds in keeping the audience glued to their seats. The makers have also relied on stylistic techniques to keep the horror prequel afloat.

Absentia

6
This is Flanagan’s first feature length movie. Absentia dives headfirst into a horrific theme marked by expectant mothers, lost lovers, and supernatural returns. The performances by actors are so real and the scares are different from typical jumpscares you come across in usual horror films. The element that stands out in the movie is its unique conclusion. There are deeply sinister and horrible situations in which you find the lead actors scared. The non-formulaic approach to story and relatable personality traits of characters make the film appealing as a whole.

Before I Wake

6.5
Mike Flanagan has created an enigmatic speculation on childhood love, loss fear and death which is uniquely executed in the movie. There are gruesome effects and bloody deaths which will give you jump scares in several scenes. The film is provocative and makes you think and feel certain situations. Though there are several foreshadows that appear in the beginning, it will not prepare you for the twist that happens towards the end.
