The Golden Age of Indian Cinema (late 1940s to early 1960s) is known for producing landmark films with strong social and political themes. The notable filmmakers of the time like Bimal Roy and Mehboob Khan portrayed the people issues in the recently freed socialist country and contributed towards nation-building under the leadership of Pandit Nehru. The films are also noted for the brilliant performances of veteran actors like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor. Female actors of the Golden Era that include Madhubala, Nargis, Meena Kumari and Waheeda Rehman also commanded a following no less than their male counterparts.

An epic drama, the 1957 film directed by Mehboob Khan and starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt is considered one of the best films of India, often being a subject of study for filmmaking students as well. It tells the story of a poor villager Radha, played by Nargis, who struggles to raise her sons while also fighting against a cruel money-lender, in the absence of her husband. It metaphorically represents India as a nation in the aftermath of its independence. The film broke all box office records of that time and won the All India Certificate of Merit for Best Feature Film. The film also bagged the Filmfare Best Film Award for 1957, and Nargis and Khan won the Best Actress and Best Director awards respectively. It also became the first Indian film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

The 1947 film is another directorial of Mehboob Khan. It explores the genre of Muslim social drama, a genre that was popular during the 1950s to late 1980s. The film stars Surendra, Leela Mishra, Munawar Sultana and Agha. It revolves around two lovers Javed and Nazparvar. Nazparvar's dad does not approve of their relationship after being influenced by his widowed daughter who convinces him to get Nazparvar married to Sajjad. This leaves the two lovers heartbroken and they part their ways. Years later, Javed who becomes a lawyer meets Nazparvar who is accused of killing her husband. The film was a huge hit and became the sixth highest-grossing film of the year.

The 1953 film, directed by Bimal Roy who is known for making social and realistic dramas, is based on Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Bengali novel of the same name. The film is said to be the most faithful adaptation of the novel especially due to its realistic portrayal and the role of Leela essayed by Meena Kumari. Meena Kumari, a 'historically incomparable' actress bagged the Filmfare Best Actress Award for the film and Roy grabbed the Best Director Award. Meena was paired alongside another iconic actor of Indian cinema, Ashok Kumar. The story revolves around a wealthy man and his middle-class neighbour who fall in love. But they face a lot of hurdles in their love story due to the family feud and a third person who also seeks the girl's affection. The film was later adapted to another film of the same name by Vidhu Vinod Chopra in 2005 that starred Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan.

The fact that this is the only film that has the iconic actors Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor sharing screen itself creates a curiosity among the audience and makes you want to watch the film. The classic romantic film directed by popular filmmaker Mehboob Khan features the two and Nargis in a love triangle and breaks several social norms of that time. The film became the highest-grossing Indian film ever at the time of its release. Its record was later broken by Raj Kapoor's film Barsaat which was also released the same year.

The first Indian film to have a worldwide release in 28 countries and subtitled in 17 languages, Aan was also India's first technicolour film. The adventure film directed and produced by Mehboob Khan stars  Dilip Kumar, Premnath, and Nimmi was the most expensive Indian film at the time. The film was very well received even in the UK where it was released as The Savage Princess. According to Wikipedia, after watching the film, Hollywood producer Cecil B. DeMille wrote a letter to Mehboob Khan saying he is looking forward to seeing more regular contributions with fine stories showcasing the romance and magic of India. "I believe it is quite possible to make pictures in your great country which will be understood and enjoyed by all nations without sacrificing the culture and customs of India," he had written. The Times had also written a review of the film stating, "Hollywood has nothing to reach up to handsome Dilip Kumar and seductive Nadira." Aan was the debut film of Nadira. The film tells the story of a king who oppresses the people of his kingdom. He is challenged by a young man Jai who kidnaps his sister.

Mehboob Khan, who is known for dealing with varied subjects in his films, has brought out another masterpiece Amar. Like his most movies, Amar portrays women with indomitable courage who fight against the injustice they face. The film boasts of a star cast that includes Dilip Kumar, Madhubala and Nimmi who have been appreciated for their brilliant performances in the film. The film also has great music, stunning cinematography and detailed sets and costumes. The gripping story revolves around an advocate Amarnath who is engaged to be married to a wealthy woman and is accused of sexually assaulting a poor village woman Sonia who sells milk. The aftermath of the tragic incident and how it affects the duo's relationship form the rest of the movie. Though the film was commercially not so successful, it was much appreciated for its sensitive approach to a serious issue. It opened to much positive response with Madhubala stealing the show.
