Dibakar Banerjee

Dibakar Banerjee, who is one of the most original, pathbreaking filmmakers that Bollywood has ever produced, turns 52 today. Despite making movies with strong, powerful themes, not all of his works have received their due at the time of release.

It’s only now that viewers have started appreciating both the director and his works, the latest being the Arjun Kapoor-Parineeti Chopra starrer Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar. OTTplay picks some of his most unique works that serve as testimony to his craft.

1
Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!
8.1OTTplay Rating
The Sushant Singh Rajput starrer is a must-watch for any true-blue film lover. Revolving around Bengal’s favourite detective, Byomkesh Bakshi, a fictional character created by writer Saradindu Bandopadhyay, who uses witty ways to solve complex crimes.
2
Sandeep aur Pinky Faraar
6.1OTTplay Rating
While most OTT viewers would have seen the film already, for those who aren’t aware, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar breaks stereotypes like no other work of the filmmaker. Sandeep, a character played by Parineeti, struggles with corruption in the corporate world and confronts it firmly. Arjun Kapoor plays the role of Pinky who helps her despite his insecurities.
3
Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!
8OTTplay Rating
Abhay Deol’s breakthrough film Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! released when Dibakar Banerjee was still exploring his place in Bollywood. He ended up making a fun film which was loved immensely by the people who had seen it. Unfortunately, many are yet to discover this sweet little gem.
4
Khosla Ka Ghosla!
8.4OTTplay Rating
You couldn’t have asked for a better follow-up film for Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! Khosla Ka Ghosla deserves a special place in the filmmaker’s career. Starring Anupam Kher and Ranvir Shorey in lead roles, the film’s wacky sense of humour is sure to keep you glued to your screens.
5
Shanghai
7.5OTTplay Rating
Dibakar found his feet in a darker zone with Shanghai, an adaptation of the Greek novel Z by Vassilis Vassilikos. The character of Jogi Parmar, played by Emraan Hashmi, particularly stands out and certainly deserved more accolades than it ended up receiving.
6
LSD: Love, Sex aur Dhokha
7.4OTTplay Rating
Back when Love Sex Aur Dhoka released, it was in news because of its bold theme but it took time for viewers to discover the true intent behind the film. The movie, which introduced Rajkummar Rao to Bollywood, was lauded for its realistic treatment.
