Bollywood actor Rekha is celebrating her birthday today and it’s an honour for the industry to have the finest actor who has essayed in about 180 films throughout her career. She has been a part of both mainstream and independent movies since the 80s and also has been the recipient of many awards including Padma Shri. She is also known for the portrayal of strong and complex female characters in her movies like Lajja, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, and more. Though she has faced a decline in her career, Rekha has built back it all numerous times by reinventing herself.

The action thriller helmed by Rakesh Roshan is all about a wealthy widow (essayed by Rekha), who is almost killed by her second husband. The story takes a turn as she sets out to take revenge on him. The movie has given birth to the strongest female protagonist in Bollywood’s history, which also gained many awards. Khoon Bhari Maang was a commercial success and received critical acclaim as well. It also has Kabir Bedi, Sonu Walla, Kader Khan, Mangal Dhillon and Satyajeet playing vital roles.

Rajkumar Santoshi’s feminist drama is an epic work inspired by a true incident in Bhawanipur, Kanpur. The movie, which is in three parts, narrates the stories through Manisha Koirala who is a runaway. The three chapters progress with the story of each woman, at whose place Manisha’s characters stop her run. Rekha essays the protagonist of the final chapter, who is an intriguing Dalit woman, victimised to gang rape. She received high praises for her performance, and also many awards for the same.
Kama Sutra - A Tale of Love

The controversial historical erotic romance is based on an Urdu short story titled Utran, penned by Wajida Tabassum. The story revolves around a princess and her maidservant who turns out to be rivals. Rekha essays a strong and complicated role in the movie, as a teacher of Kama Sutra. It is interesting to note that the English-language film was banned in India during the time of its release, due to its erotic theme and content.

The popular science fiction starring Hrithik Roshan is all about the friendship between a youth and an alien. Rekha plays the role of Sonia Mehra, who is a single mother to the disabled protagonist. Besides being a commercial success, it was also one of the most popular films of 2003. Koi...Mil Gaya won the Filmfare Award for Best Film and Rekha received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
