There are very few figures in Indian cinema who have made a splash in Bollywood in the magnitude that Shah Rukh Khan has. Aptly dubbed ‘Baadshah of Bollywood’ by his adoring fans, the star has had his name attached to a plethora of films, over 80 of them, in a career spanning over four decades.

From humble beginnings as an obscure name on the small screen, SRK made his Bollywood debut in 1992 sharing the screen with Divya Bharti and Rishi Kapoor. Since then, it's safe to say, he has never looked back.

Khan has not only been a part of fan favourite blockbusters which have broken the box-office, but he has also starred in several thought provoking and profound projects dealing with a number of social and political themes. His thoughtful performances, wrought with emotion, earned him the adulation of audiences and etched his name as one of the finest talents the country has to offer. His portrayals have also earned him numerous accolades.

On the star’s 56th birthday, here's a list of moving performances from the actor in films that have gone down in Indian film history as some of his best known work.

Helmed by the legendary Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Devdas is based on the 1917 novel of the same name. Set in the 1900s, the film tells the tale of a young man from an aristocratic family who becomes distraught after his family prohibits him from marrying the love of his life. As a way to cope with his frustration, he decides to drown his sorrows in drinking, ultimately finding solace in the arms of a kindly courtesan. Khan portrays the role of the titular Devdas, his grief at being denied a chance of happiness forcing him to turn to drink to numb his emotional turmoil. Although the film was not well received at the time, it has become one of Khan’s best known works from the 2000s. He earned a Filmfare award for his role.
