Vera Farmiga has made a splash in Hollywood ever since she made her on-screen debut in the 90s. Born to Ukrainian parents, she was bitten by the acting bug as a high schooler. Since then she has indulged in the arts, becoming a skilled dancer, pianist and of course, actress. As she turns 48 the Academy Award-nominated actress has a stunning career to look back on, where she has put up powerful performances on screen and stage. Here are just a few of them.

Down to the Bone

Widely regarded as her breakthrough, Vera Farmiga plays a drug-addicted mother in this independent drama. Living a mundane life, she tries to keep her drug habit a secret from her family. However, with each passing day her attempt at keeping up appearances, as a mother and a wife, begins to take its toll on her.
The Conjuring

The first instalment in The Conjuring universe, this supernatural horror film is based on real events that took place in 1971. A family who moves into a new house begin to experience strange and disturbing phenomena. To get to the bottom of this, they seek the help of Ed and Lorraine Warren, a husband-wife duo of paranormal investigators. Vera Farmiga reprises her role as Lorraine Warren in subsequent movies in the universe as well.
Up in the Air

Based on a 2001 novel of the same name, Up in the Air centres around the story of Ryan, an employee of a firm who has to constantly travel for his work, which involves laying off his clients’ employees. When a young, ambitious new woman at his firm suggests certain innovations which would do away with the need to meet clients in person and threatens his carefree, high flying lifestyle, it is up to him to show her that some things cannot be done without a personal touch. Vera Farmiga plays a woman who strikes up a relationship with Ryan when they constantly meet on their travels.
Bates Motel

Set as a prequel of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, set in modern times, Bates Motel follows the story of Norman and Norma Bates when the mother-son duo purchase a motel to signify the start of their new life after Norman’s father’s death. Farmiga plays the role of the loving, albeit protective mother of Norman, who struggles to keep her son’s exacerbating mental illness in check. The actress was nominated for an Emmy for her role.

Orphan is a horror film that tells the story of young Esther, a nine-year-old Russian girl, who is adopted by a couple mourning the loss of their baby. However, the couple soon realizes that Esther is quite unlike a normal child her age, as disturbing revelations come to light about their adopted daughter. Vera Farmiga plays the role of the mother.
Higher Ground

Higher Ground marked Vera Farmiga’s debut in the director’s chair. The film tells the story of a Christian woman’s faith throughout her life. It explores the ever-changing relationship she has with God, influenced by the various events of her life. Farmiga also stars as the lead in the movie, which is based on a memoir.
