Hindi films where animals played a prominent role

Bollywood has been fascinated with animals and has offered several hit films with them playing significant roles in the narrative. In many films, these furry ones have stolen the limelight and our hearts too, making the films of even the yesteryears evergreen in our minds. The animals do not just add to the admiration for the movie with just their presence but they also play matchmakers, cupids, umpires and revenge-seekers, though their revenge, biting and chewing things and human enemies of their owners are charming and will leave you in splits.

Here are some films that will make for a watch, more importantly for the roles played by the furry companions in the stories.

In the dysfunctional Mehra family, Pluto, the dog, only seemed to be a sane member. It was interesting to also see the bullmastiff narrate the entire story. Voiced by Aamir Khan, the dog managed to steal the show from A-list actors like Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh. In fact, he plays a major role in bringing the love birds Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma together in the film. Pluto, the cute adorable dog makes the watch even more interesting.

Talking about animal movies in the Hindi film industry, one cannot forget Hum Aapke Hai Koun. If it weren't for Tuffy, Prem and Nisha would not have united. The scenes of Tuffy being the wicketkeeper in the family cricket match, playing match-maker between couples and reuniting lovers will make you go awww! He's simply so 'pawdorable' that the lead actress Madhuri Dixit adopted the most important member of the Choudhary family after the film. Tuffy is one of the reasons why people still remember the film even after almost three decades of its release.
Life of Pi

A friendship of sorts between a human and a tiger is quite strange. But the entire film Life of Pi, directed by Ang Lee, is based on the relationship between the tiger Richard Parker and a boy Pi, who are stranded on a boat. A fantasy drama starring veteran actor Irrfan Khan, the film became one of the highest-grossing films of the director. The tiger was created with special effects and yet, it manages to scare you, annoy you and also get you emotional. The scene where the tiger is seen to be nearly drowning and the fear in its eyes will hit the chords with you, displaying beautifully the sentience of the wild animal.
Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na

The film kind of normalised the memorial service and a full-blown funeral for our beloved pets. While Jay tries to cheer up Aditi at the beginning of the film with an entire song Kabhi Kabhi, it initially gives an impression that she is upset because of probably a breakup. Well, it was a breakup, except that it wasn't with a human being (probably, then she wouldn't have been so sad either), it was with her cat, who passed away.
Haathi Mere Saathi

It's not just dogs who have proved to be loyal friends to humans, but other animals too, even the wild. The 1971 film is about the friendship between an orphaned Raju and four of his elephants who do street acts to earn a living. The elephants are so attached to their master that they fight a leopard to save his life and also get emotional and sacrifice their lives to reunite him with his wife. The film went on to become one of the biggest hits of the year on its release.
Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon

Animals are usually common in Sooraj Barjatya's films. In this film too, he includes animal characters in the story: Raja Tota and the golden retriever Johnie are the cutest actors in the film and they are probably the only ones who will keep you alive throughout the narrative. Raja Tota, a CGI talking parrot, can be annoying as it keeps repeating the names of old Hindi movies but is an intelligent animal.
