Surrogacy is a sensitive topic to talk about and the Indian film industry is taking it seriously to put out how surrogacy is not supposed to be a hushed-up topic, instead of a normal practice that people can avail themselves of if they want to be parents. Even though it is 2021, the stigma surrounding surrogacy still prevails and it is high time we normalise it. The latest movie, Mimi is garnering a lot of attention and admiration from the audience for the portrayal of the complex subject of surrogacy in a nuanced way.

Chori Chori Chupke Chupke is one of the first mainstream films in Bollywood that dealt with the subject of surrogacy. A sex worker is hired by a young couple to carry their child for them. Things take a topsy-turvy turn as the surrogate falls in love with the husband and insists on keeping the baby. The movie features Salman Khan, Rani Mukherji, and Preity Zindta in the lead roles under the direction of Abbas Mustan who started the discourse around the hushed-up topic. Even though the film itself was ridden with Bollywood stereotypes.

The story revolves around two friends Rewa Singh (Tabu) and Sia Seth (Sushmita Sen). When Rewa cannot conceive a child, her friend steps in to be the surrogate. Under the direction of Meghna Gulzar, the film showcased a power-packed performance from both the actors and also a very realistic depiction as to how changes that huge a step like this can bring to relationships.

I Am raises a social concern on how a mother is scared as to how society is going to judge her unconventional journey of motherhood.

Ayushmann’s character played an effective role as he broke down several stereotypes by playing his role as a massively fertile sperm donor.

Good Newwz is a comedy-drama based on the concept of in-vitro fertilisation. The movie features Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kiara Advani and Diljit Dosanjh in the main roles. It is about a ridiculous swap that happens when the two couples attempt surrogacy. The film is about two couples with the same surnames pursuing in-vitro fertilisation and waiting for their upcoming babies. But the trouble awaits as the sperm of each couple has been mixed with the other.
Mala Aai Vhhaychy!

Kriti Sanon and Pankaj Tripathi starrer Mimi is the Hindi remake of this Marathi movie. Mala Aai Vahhaychy! which roughly translates to “I want to be a mother'' was bankrolled by Samruoddhi Porey back in 2011. The movie won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi in 2011.
