Even though it has been only 14 years since Tamil actor Karthi made his debut, he has already carved a space for himself in the industry. Before his on screen debut, the younger brother of actor Suriya worked as an assistant director under filmmakers such as Mani Ratnam. But from his first film Paruthiveeran, Karthi has been noted for his award-winning performances that have also garnered him a huge fan base.

On his 44th birthday, we take a look at some of the most important movies that helped shape Karthi’s career as one of the most loved actors in the South.

Karthi’s debut movie, Paruthiveeran, was very well received by both critics and audiences alike. The movie won two National Awards, two State Awards and multiple other honours and helped Karthi to get a jump start in his acting career. Along with Karthi, Priyamani, Ponvannan, Saravanan and Sujatha Sivakumar also played major roles in the movie which also was a huge commercial success. The period drama, set in Madurai, deals with the subject of caste segregation and social issues.
Ayirathil Oruvan
7.5OTTplay Rating
Aayirathil Oruvan elegantly combined action drama with history to create a unique experience for the audience. Starring Karthi, Andrea Jeremiah and Reema Sen in the lead, the movie follows three people who embark on a journey to a lost city to find a missing archeologist. The movie talks about ancient culture, martial arts and foreign links to the Tamil civilization and is now a cult classic. Karthi’s character in the movie was that of a coolie who assists the two women on their journey. But midway through the film, his character takes a turn when the characters become possessed by ancient spirits.

Starring Karthi and Tamannaah in the lead roles, Paiyaa is a romantic action-thriller following a young woman who has to travel from Bangalore to Mumbai and she is chauffeured by a jobless youth. The plot seems to be perfectly set for a carefree romantic movie until the couple are chased and attacked by a group of gangsters while another group of goons led by Shiva’s (Karthi) enemies are also following them. The movie showcases some good road chase scenes and action sequences featuring Karthi. But it is the songs from the movie that helped Karthi’s fame. Songs like Thuli Thuli and Adada Mazhaida were very popular among youth at the time and made Karthi a romantic star.
Kaatru Veliyidai
6.3OTTplay Rating
Karthi is seen as a Indian Air Force Pilot who is captured by enemies and imprisoned as a prisoner of war while serving during the Kargil War in the movie. During his time in the prison, Varun Chakrapani (Karthi) reminisces of the love of his life, Leela (Aditi Rao Hydari). The film had Karthi playing shades of grey as his character that initially starts off as a romantic hero soon turns an abusive husband. The movie was directed by Mani Ratnam, whom Karthi had assisted before beginning his acting career.
Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru
8.3OTTplay Rating
Based on true events from the Operation Bawaria case, Theeran Adhigaram Ondru featured Karthi as police officer Theeran who bravely leads a team to solve multiple dacoit murder cases by a mysterious gang. Karthi effortlessly portrays the character of this police officer from his training period till the ongoing investigation. Audience lauded Karthi’s casting as the smart police officer in the gripping thriller.

One of the most important films in Karthi’s career, Kaithi is considered as one of the finest action thrillers to come out of the Tamil movie industry. Karthi’s looks from this movie reminds us of his character from Paruthiveeran and impresses us with a matching performance. Portraying the character of a prisoner-turned-ally for police officers, Karthi’s character is sure to get our blood rushing with his ‘mass’ action scenes. Supported by a pacy script, the movie helped Karthi prove that he can handle unconventional characters well too.
