MT Vasudevan Nair holds the title of being one of the most inventive and well-known Malayalam writers of his time. His works have been described as groundbreaking, tackling themes which most Malayalis can relate to. He is also the recipient of several awards and has made strides in the field of cinema as well, both as a director and a script-writer. In celebration of the literary heavyweight’s birthday, here are a few of his films guaranteed to sweep you off your feet.

Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha

Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha earned MT Vasudevan Nair his first National Film Award For Best Screenplay. The plot of the film is taken from a North Malabar folk song and tells the story of Chandu Chekavar, a 16th century warrior. This sympathetic take on a character widely described as a ‘chathiyan’ or betrayer was a critical and commercial success.

A bold narrative about a regressive practice among Namboodiris in Kerala, long since eradicated, Parinayam tells the story of a young widow who has to go through the ordeal of Smārthavichāram. It was a practice of community trials directed at Namboodiri women accused of adultery. MT Vasudevan Nair won a National Award for best screenplay for the film.

Regarded as a cult-classic, Sadayam tells the story of a convict accused of murder, awaiting his death sentence. Mohanlal plays the lead role and has been lauded for his stellar performance. This film too has earned MT Vasudevan Nair a National Award for best screenplay.

The directorial debut of MT, the film also featured the acting debuts of Sukumaran and Sumithra. Adapted from one of the director’s short stories titled Pallivalum Kalchilambum, the movie explores the lives of a group of people who are dependent on a derelict temple for their livelihoods.

Anubhandham tells the story of a young, widowed single mother who starts a kindergarten as a way to make ends meet. The film features a stellar cast of Mammotty, Mohanlal, Seema and Shobhana and has won several awards.

This MT directed film tells the story of a jaded city-dweller who has to go back to his native village and to his estranged family, and the events that conspire after. The title of the movie is taken from a short story by MT Vasudevan Nair.
