There may be a few who are familiar with the Indian freedom struggle who are unaware of Subhas Chandra Bose. The leader, whose patriotism and vigour played a pivotal role in ridding the country of the British Raj. His resounding echoes of "Give me blood and I will give you freedom" and "Glory to India!”, which spurred his fellow men to take part in the most important movement in the country’s history, are something which every Indian must be familiar with.

On the late leader’s 125th birth anniversary today, here are a few films and television shows that pay tribute to the patriot thru their stories.

This Bengali TV series gives viewers a glimpse into the life of a young Bose, taking us thru what made this spunky young man grow up to be one of the most admired and respected revolutionaries in the Indian independence movement. Viewers see how, even as a young man, Bose was never one to shy away from expressing his patriotic side, no matter the enemies he made or the friends he lost in the process of staying true to his country.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero

8.1
This epic war film focuses on one of the most important periods in the Indian revolutionary's life toward its end, during the 1940s when he lived in Germany and spent time in areas occupied by Japanese troops. The film also shows in detail the events that led to the establishment of the Indian National Army or Azad Hind Fauj. Although the film sparked controversy, in particular, due to its storytelling, it received widespread critical acclaim. Sachin Khedekar essays the role of Bose.

Gumnaami

This Bengali drama also draws inspiration from one of Anuj Dhar’s books titled "Conundrum," which he co-wrote with Chandrachurs Ghose. The film also deals with the revolutionary's death and offers quite a startling theory on the same in a dramatized fashion. It tells the story of how a journalist makes a bold claim at the Mukherjee Commission hearings—that the death of Bose as known to the public was, in fact, a staged event, and that the freedom fighter had lived out the rest of his days under the guise of an ascetic named Gumnami Baba. The film stirred up controversy when one of Bose’s relatives expressed their displeasure at the idea explored in the film.

Raag Desh

7.9
This 2017 historical film takes viewers thru the Indian National Army trials that took place in the aftermath of World War II, under which officers were charged by the British Raj for various offences committed during the war, which included treason, torture, and murder. The film also showcases how Bose brought the army back to the country after the war and the events that led to the British Raj losing the foothold that they had over the nation. Kenny Basumatary plays Bose in the film.
