This year, Onam celebrations with our loved ones and families are special, thanks to the various odds we had in our lives for more than a year. We also recognize certain values, morals and the importance of having our family around you through thick and thin. It isn’t an exaggeration to say that movies and Onam go hand-in-hand. The moviegoers in Kerala always love watching films in movie halls during the festive season. However, the pandemic has made things topsy-turvy for them. But thanks to OTT releases and other streaming platforms, film buffs can continue watching their favourite films. Check out a few popular Malayalam films to binge-watch as we celebrate the grand festive occasion with our dear ones.

This Mohanlal-starrrer, a superhit thriller, revolves around a family man who goes to any extent to keep his family safe. When a major obstacle comes his way, the protagonist is forced to hide a crime which one of his family members committed. This movie, which went on to become a smashing hit, was loved by family audiences, thanks to intriguing family emotions depicted in it. Though a crime thriller, the film highlights the bonding of family members and stresses the fact that family is what matters at the end of the day.

An estranged boy from Gujarat is fostered by Madhavan’s (Mammootty) family when they fail to find his parents. Later, they come to know that the kid was separated from his family after the earthquake which hit Gujarat in 2001. Madhavan decides to unite the boy and his family and heads to Gujarat for the same, though the boy finds happiness in the former’s home and his family members. The movie highlights the significance of compassion and love among family members.

Faizi, a role played by Dulquer Salmaan, is considered as the black sheep of his family as he indulges in things that do not please his father. Quite dejected with his father’s strict behaviour, he leaves his home and starts working at his grandfather’s biryani shop. As time passes by, he unites both his father and grandfather who were not on good terms for a long time. The film reminds us that it is never too late to forgive and reunite with your family.

Krishnan Unni, played by Dileep, goes in search of his family to unite some of his family members. He also has plans to reconcile with his father as the latter had asked him not to enter the house as he disapproved of Unni’s relationship with a girl. Later, thanks to the efforts of several family members, the son-father duo unites much to the delight of others. The movie, which marked the 100th film of Dileep, makes us realise the importance of family and relationships.

The movie, which was a comeback of sorts for Mohanlal, is one of the well-made family movies in the history of Mollywood. The actor plays a role who struggles to keep his father’s illicit relationship a secret. While he manages his family and the secret, suspicions arise from everywhere and he is despised by his own family. Caught up in the whirlwind of lies and confusions, later he clears the air and his family accepts him. The film portrays the fact that every family member craves for love and respect from others.

Young Muthu is denied his mother’s love, but is accepted and loved dearly by his step father Rajarathnam (Saikumar). Muthu returns the favour duly, as when Raja Rathnam's son ends up killing one of the children of the village, he takes up the blame and leaves the village. Years later, when he comes back to his home as Rajamanikyam (Mammootty) after his step father’s demise, his mother showers him with love.
