Combining the lifeline of every Bengali, Durga Puja, with a tale of serene human emotions, the movie checks all the boxes of a must-watch. A heart-touching storyline based on the real incident of Evan Leversage, a Canadian boy diagnosed with a terminal illness, the movie revolves around a young girl, Uma, who wishes to see the grand celebrations of Durga Puja in Kolkata, after being diagnosed with cancer. This leads to her father and the entire family, along with the help of a director, to recreate the festival in the month of April.

A detective thriller set in the premise of Bonedi Barir Durga Puja – sounds exciting, doesn't it? With clues hidden in riddles and folk songs, the movie not only manages to weave a tightly-knit plot, but also showcases the traditional history and cultural heritage associated with the festival. The inclusion of soothing music tracks and breath-taking visuals, along with commendable performances by Abir Chatterjee as the savvy historian-turned-detective Sonada, and Arjun Chakrabarty as his innocent nephew, Abir, the concoction is a treat to the senses.

The movie narrates the story of an artiste, who decides to make the largest idol of Ma Durga for a pandal in Deshapriya Park, but old enmities, broken relationships and bruised egos stand in his path to success. Highlighting the grey shade of human character, added with the spice of unrequited love, Asur builds upon the message that even the best of us can become slaves of circumstances, which can turn us into demons (asurs) anytime.

A thriller masterpiece focusing on a pregnant woman, searching for her missing husband in the City of Joy, the movie is one-of-a-kind. Portraying the lead role is Vidya Balan, who manages to flawlessly depict the character of a pregnant wife, earnestly trying to find her partner only to be told repeatedly, that he does not exist. The plot gets mind-boggling as you dive into the intricacies of the over-looming conspiracy, realising that the truth may be much wilder than you anticipated. Set against the festivities of Durga Puja in Kolkata, the climax of Kahaani perfectly captures the essence of the all-powerful goddess.

A tale of love, jealousy and the pain of separation, with class, religious and national divides cutting through like barbed wires – the movie has a simple script at the crux that starts and ends with Bijoya Dashami, the last day of Durga Puja. But nuanced performances and the soulful voice of Kalikaprasad Bhattacharjee, make it one worth remembering. The subtle restraint, unspoken words and wounded expressions of Jaya Ehsaan, along with the balanced acting of Kaushik Ganguly, steal the spotlight. · Utsab
8.1OTTplay Rating
Chronicling the story of a poignant family drama, the movie heralded a new dawn in Bengali film industry. Directed by the iconic Rituparno Ghosh, Utsab speaks on interpersonal feud and familial dynamics, as well as dissects the hypocrisy, pain, love, and sacrifice that an entire generation was experiencing at the time, on facing the axe of modernity while clinging on to ‘what’s been’. Placing itself in the premise of a Rajbari preparing for its annual Durga Puja celebration, the movie wonderfully depicts the issue at hand.
