Coming to terms with one’s sexuality can be a scary and overwhelming experience. It is not a smooth process and that’s probably why majority of the times, people are cluelessly stuck alone.

While there are widespread movements supporting the LGBTQI+ community and awareness is slowing increasing around the world, we still need more movies to represent the group.

Here are some underrated movies about coming out that you can watch.

1
Love, Simon
7.7OTTplay Rating
A standard teen rom-com with a twist Love, Simon features a closeted gay protagonist. The sweet, heart-warming story captures the journey towards self-acceptance and coming out of the lead character, Simon. One of the first few Hollywood films to focus on bringing gay characters to the limelight, Love Simon is filled with warmth and sensitivity. This movie will definitely fill your heart.
2
Alex Strangelove
6.4OTTplay Rating
A drama-comedy revolving around Alex's journey to self-discovery, Alex Strangelove is a tender coming-out movie. Happily in love with his girlfriend, Alex’s life goes into a whirlwind when he meets an openly gay senior at a party. The story of attraction, resistance and finally acceptance is what makes this movie a must watch.
3
G.B.F.
6.2OTTplay Rating
G.B.F is not like any other conventional coming out story. It offers a fresh twist to the otherwise serious and disheartening stories by giving them a humorous spin. More than the coming out process, the movie follows its consequences. It follows the story of Tanner, who after coming out, becomes the bone of contention between three of the most popular girls in school as they try and make him their ‘Gay Best Friend’. This teen comedy follows an unconventional story of coming out while giving out a message to not be relegated to being a token.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga
5.9OTTplay Rating
Bollywood’s first depiction of a lesbian relationship, this movie was ground-breaking. This attempt at depicting same-sex relationships is crafty, emotional and also a family entertainer. The emotional narrative of the movie also makes it a crowd-pleaser. Sweety’s coming out story, Ek Ladki to Dekha to Aisa Laga is filled with warmth and has its heart at the right place.
5
Your Name Engraved Herein
7.6OTTplay Rating
This Taiwanese LGBTQ film is a simple, touching love story of two young boys, Jia-Han and Birdy. Set in 1987, shortly after the end of martial law, the movie captures the journey of two young boys as their friendship develops into something more as one partner decides to come out while the other doesn’t. The movie is raw, realistic and unforgiving; it presents the reality of the time in complete honesty.
