In The Name Of The Father, a 1993 movie, is directed by Jim Sheridan, streaming on Amazon Prime Video. It is a biographical-courtroom and drama film, based on the true story of “Guildford Four”. The movie stars Pete Postlethwaite and Daniel Day-Lewis in the lead.
In 1974, during one evening, an explosion happened at a pub in Guildford, which killed four off-duty soldiers and a civilian, wounding 65 people. Meanwhile, Gerry gets arrested for being a part of the Guildford Four.
During Gerry’s prison time, he meets Joe McAndrew, who is the real perpetrator of the bombing as McAndrew confessed the truth to the police, but the information is being withheld to avoid official embarrassment.
Gerry fights for justice, and a common slogan is used by the supporters “Free the Four.” Daniel Day-Lewis in regards to his role, not only lost thirty pounds but also spent nights in the jail cell on the set, while the crew members were asked to throw water and verbal abuse at him.
The film ends with Gerry's release and revelation of his story to the media, yet the real perpetrators of the Guildford Bombing have not been charged with the crime.
