Mariner of the Mountains

 Director Karïm Ainouz’s Portuguese documentary, Mariner of The Mountains, which premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, shows the filmmaker embarking on a journey to cross the Mediterranean to arrive at Algeria on a boat, accompanied only by his camera and the memories of his mother, Iracema. Through this journey to his father’s homeland, Aïnouz presents a poignant and utmost personal memoir, weaving together the past, present, and future in an incredible journey through space and time. The director’s earlier film, The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmão, received widespread critical acclaim and won the top prize at Cannes in 2019.
