Sleuth is a 1972 British - American English - language film directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. It is a mystery thriller film starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine. The movie follows the story of an Italian English hairdresser named Milo Tindle living in England. He is invited by the successful writer of the very popular detective stories Andrew Wyke to visit his isolated house. Milo is a lower class boy who is in love with Andrew's wife. He wants to have a comfortable life, and he intends to marry her. Hence, Milo puts forward a strange request in front of Andrew. He wants Andrew to divorce his wife so that Milo can marry her. Andrew is not majorly shocked and accepts as there is already a drift between him and his wife. Apart from this, he is also involved with another woman. But, in exchange Andrew proposes to Milo to steal his jewelry simulating a burglary. Milo would earn a hefty amount selling the jewels to an intermediary and Andrew would be reimbursed by the insurance company and would not have to pay alimony.
