Aamir Khan revealed that he was in talks with filmmaker RS Prasanna about doing Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017) for his next film on his birthday in March. According to mid-day, the project is based on the 2018 Spanish film Campeones, which follows a volatile basketball coach who, as part of his community service sentence, assembles a team of intellectually impaired athletes for the Special Olympics. It has now been reported that the project is moving at a rapid rate. The production team has been told to get ready for a shoot in September.

A source told the tabloid that Aamir wants to start working on the film after the August release of Laal Singh Chaddha. Given the subject matter, the sports drama will be shot mostly outdoors. The producers sought to avoid filming in the rainy city. So, starting in September, it'll be a two-month shoot straight.

The set will be built at Film City for the first schedule. Khan will also produce the film. Meanwhile, sources claim that another project from the superstar's stable, titled Preetam Pyaare, went on floors in Lucknow last week.

Talking about his upcoming film, Advait Chandan directed Laal Singh Chaddha, which has a script written by Eric Roth and Atul Kulkarni. Aamir Khan Productions, Viacom18 Studios, and Paramount Pictures are collaborating on the project. The film also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh, and Naga Chaitanya in his Hindi cinema debut, and is based on the 1994 American film Forrest Gump, which is in turn based on Winston Groom's 1986 novel of the same name.

Over two decades, the adaptation of Forrest Gump underwent numerous alterations, with Atul Kulkarni spending the first 10 years rewriting the script and another ten years obtaining the remake rights. With the help of Los Angeles-based producer and filmmaker Radhika Chaudhari, Aamir purchased the film's rights in early 2018 and revealed the title on March 14, 2019.
