Even though Avatar: The Way of Water made a whopping $2.3 billion at the box office worldwide, it was not enough to knock the original Avatar off its top spot. The first movie, which was released in 2009, still holds the record as the highest-grossing film ever, with $2.9 billion in total earnings. Avatar has won three Oscars for Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design in 2010.
James Cameron's disclosure
While director James Cameron revealed all the probable release dates of Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 long back, recently he shared some more information about the upcoming films. He told People magazine, “We did the capture on three and the live-action photography on three as an intermingled production with Avatar: The Way of Water, and we even did part of movie four because our young characters are all going to have a big time jump in movie four.”
The Titanic-director also revealed that Avatar 4 will be having a long gap to release, after Avatar 3. “We see them and then we go away for six years and we come back. And so the part where we come back is the part we haven't shot yet. So we'll start on that after three is released”, Cameron stated.

James Cameron recalls Avatar: The Way of Water filming
While talking about the making of Avatar 3, James shared that the film will be having much deeper characters, “Three (Avatar 3) is actually much more straightforward than two (Avatar 2).” The 69-year-old director recalled filming days of Avatar: The Way of Water, and shared that back then it was pandemic, hence they could not do it properly. “We were interrupted, and then we had to reboot and reboot the production and all that sort of thing. And it was a scramble to get it done.”
