Deepika Padukone has made big headlines and many Indians proud after being invited to be part of the jury panel of this year’s ongoing Cannes International Film Festival. The actor has now stated that more Indian movies deserve to be at the prestigious film festival.

In an interview with Film Companion, Deepika Padukone was asked about how more Indian films could make it to Cannes. “Had you asked me this question last year or before this experience, I would have said it was the content that we are creating,” said Deepika, adding that the issue is with the selection process. “I've seen movies and I'm thinking why couldn't this movie of ours be here, I'm not thinking about winning, that's secondary. I am beginning to get convinced that it's about the fact that it has to do with the selection process because a lot of our movies deserve to be here,” she added.

The actor then had a message for Indian filmmakers, saying that we are doing absolutely correct, making different types of movies in the country.

Deepika Padukone is one of the jury members of this year’s festival, which also includes the likes of Asghar Farhadi, Rebecca Hall, Ladj Ly, Jeff Nichols, Noomi Rapace, Joachim Trier and Jasmine Trinca. The panel is headed by Vincent Lindon who was a part of last year’s Palme d’Or winner, Titane.

A lot of Indian celebrities have also been a part of Cannes 2022, after India was selected as the country of honour. A handful of Indian films from the past and present have also been screened at this year’s festival, with R. Madhavan’s Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, making its premiere.
