Two years after its announcement, Gangubai Kathiawadi is finally getting a new theatrical release date. The film featuring Alia Bhatt in the leading role is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and is now hitting the big screens on January 6, 2022. The home banner of SLB took to their social media pages and announced the release date with a poster featuring Alia in her Gangubai avatar.

They captioned the post as "The wait to witness her power, strength & resilience ends. Bringing to you a stem-winding story of #GangubaiKathiawadi on 6th January 2022, in cinemas near you."

Gangubai Kathiawadi marks the first outing of Bhansali and Alia on the big screen. The film features Ajay Devgn as Karim Lala in an extended cameo appearance.

The movie is loosely based on the book titled Mafia Queens of Mumbai written by S Hussain Zaidi. It narrates the story of Gangubai who is sold at a brothel in Kamathipura, Mumbai, wherein she then becomes the Madam.

Earlier this year in June, Alia had announced the shoot wrap of Gangubai Kathiawadi with a bunch of photos shared on her social media pages. The actor wrote, "We started shooting Gangubai on the 8th of December 2019 .. and we wrapped the film now 2 years later!"

Bhatt further stated, "This film and set has been through two lockdowns.. two cyclones.. director and actor getting covid during the making!!! the troubles the set has faced is another film altogether! But through all that and more.. what I take away is the gigantic life-changing experience!"

Moreover, Alia also revealed that being directed by Bhansali was a dream for her for a very long time which got fulfilled in a gigantic way. She added, "I don’t think anything would have prepared me for the journey I was on for these two years... I walk out of this set a diff person today!"

As per reports, Gangubai Kathiawadi also features television actor Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, Seema Pahwa and others in pivotal roles.
