In two and a half minutes, the trailer for Darlings goes from light-hearted comedy to a dark thriller. Badrunissa (Alia Bhatt) is married to Hamza Shaikh (Vijay Varma), a ticket checker who is often made to clean toilets at his workplace. The trailer begins with Hamza telling us that he loves his wife very much, but plans on leaving her. One evening, he doesn’t show up at home. When a sexily-dressed Badrunissa opens the door to an elderly gent, expecting her husband, we learn that Hamza has disappeared. So Badrunissa, accompanied by her mother (Shefali Shah), set off to file a missing person’s report at a police station. Just as the police officers begin to conclude that the case might just be a dead-end, there’s a twist in the tale. We see Badrunissa being brutally assaulted by Hamza on multiple occasions. It seems at one point, she decides she’s had enough — which is how Hamza ends up being tied up and being subjected to everything from being thrashed with a frying pan to being fed rat poison. Badrunissa seems to be on a mission: “Main inko maarna nahi chaahti, Ammi. Main inke saath wahi karungi, ditto, jo yeh mere saath kiye (I don’t want to kill him. I’ll treat him exactly how he treated me),” she tells her mother. Check out the trailer here.
