India’s first historical film can be traced back to 1913 when Dadasaheb Phalke made Raja Harishchandra. With the development of technology, the medium, and CGI, we have seen films being made about historical figures and folk tales - Asoka, Akbar-Birbal, Peshwa Bajirao, just to name a few.

The most recent historical film to hit theatres is based on the life of the 12th Century ruler of Ajmer, Samrat Prithviraj. Akshay Kumar plays the 12th Century king, while Manushi Chillar makes her feature film debut. The film is a fictionalised retelling loosely based on true events.
