Following the birth of her son Avyaan Azaad Rekhi in May 2021, Dia Mirza experienced some of the most challenging times. Dia said in a recent interview revealed that her baby was born early and that circumstance put both the mother as well as the child's lives in danger.
Dia revealed in an interview with Bollywood Hungama how she had to have an appendix removed within the 5th month of her pregnancy, explaining that she most likely had this procedure that caused a bacterial infection in her body. She stated, "My placenta was haemorrhaging and the doctor said I have to pull your baby out, otherwise I would have gone into sepsis. It was life-threatening for both of us, and the baby needed surgery within 36 hours of birth."
The actress continued and said Avyaan needed another procedure soon after, so she was unable to be present for the duration of it. She explained, "And then three and a half months after he was born, he had to go through a second surgery. He was in the NICU right through that time. I wasn’t even allowed to hold him till two and a half months had passed after he was born."
Dia also said that all of this transpired during the second wave of the pandemic, so there were restrictions that she needed to follow, making the procedure much more difficult for the new mom. "He was tiny and fragile," she added. Dia described how she could only visit her child twice a week. Although it was extremely difficult, she never lost hope that her son would stay with her as well as that her baby Avyaan would manage to live.
Dia married businessman Vaibhav Rekhi in a private ceremony in February 2021.
