Dobaara actress Taapsee Pannu says boycott calls for Hindi films has become a joke

Dobaara actress Taapsee Pannu has said the recent trend on social media calling for boycott of Hindi films has become a joke and that it undermines the intelligence of viewers. The actress says that she has now passed the stage and that the cancel culture and boycott trends on social media do not even bother her. While addressing the media at a recent press conference, the actress stated that if that boycott calls become a daily affair, one does not bother about it anymore. 

Taapsee's latest film, Dobaara, helmed by Anurag Kashyap, recently hit screens and the film has managed to get only 2-3 per cent occupancy in theatres. The film stars Taapsee and Pavail Gulati in the lead. While Taapsee's performance has been appreciated, the film seem to have failed to set the cash registers ringing, courtesy the mininum footfalls in theatre. "I cannot talk about others in the industry, but for me and Anurag, it has become a joke," she stated on the boycott culture. 

The trend of hashtags calling for a film's boycott began ahead of Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha release. Aamir had then stated that he was saddened by the boycott calls and urged the audience to watch his film, which is a remake of the cult classic, Forrest Gump starring Tom Hanks. The hashtag once again cropped up when Akshay Kumar's Raksha Bandhan was lined up for release. Social media trends are now asking to boycott Taapsee's Dobaara as well. 

"If the audience like, they will go to watch a film. If they don't like, they won't. But giving the boycott call is like undermining my audience's intelligence," Taapsee had said at the conference.

Dobaara is a mystery drama that revolves around a woman who gets an opportunity to save the life of a boy who witnessed a death during a thunderstorm, by getting connected through the television set during a similar storm in the present. The film was billed as a remake of the Spanish film, Mirage. However, Taapse has rubbished it as a rumour and stated that Dobaara was neither copied or inspired. Taapsee also called Dobaara, one of the most gripping films, Anurag Kashyap has made till date.
