Over the course of her career, Taapsee Pannu has appeared in films across languages, starred in one that won a National Award, and produced hits. In an interview with Indian Express, the actress discussed her journey of becoming a star and the advice given to her by her friend and fellow filmmaker Anurag Kashyap to make it big in Bollywood.
Taapsee said, “I have told him that I want to be a star, and he has also scolded me. When Anurag and I fought after Dobaaraa’s edit, he said, ‘Why do you work with me? If you want to be a star, go and work with Rohit Shetty!’ But not everyone has the same formula. I want to take a different route to stardom. If Rohit Shetty does not give me a chance, what do I do?”
The actress did not shy away from expressing that she does want to achieve superstardom. According to the actress, one benefit of it is that it at least provides performers with the assurance that their movies would be seen by a larger crowd, something that wasn't the case with her most recent release, Shabaash Mithu.
Taapsee played the lead in Srijit Mukherji's biography of the former Indian cricket captain Mithali Raj. Shabaash Mithu, the actor's first theatrical film since the pandemic, which premiered to poor reviews and eventually failed to perform well at the box office.
She added, “As an actor, there is only so much that I can do. I am an actor who wants to become a star. I did whatever I could in my capacity, to do my job. But I am not the director, not the producer of the film. It is eventually team work.”
Meanwhile, Dobaaraa will feature Taapsee, who previously collaborated with Anurag for the 2018 romantic drama Manmarziyaan, which also starred Vicky Kaushal and Abhishek Bachchan. Dobaara, an official remake of the 2018 Spanish film Mirage, was produced by Ekta Kapoor. On August 19, the movie, which also stars Pavail Gulati, Nassar, Vidushi Mehra, and many others, will be released in theatres.
